We are a European-inspired company

Fashion runs in families around the world, from Gucci to Hermes to Missoni. This year, two of Canada's most prolific fast-fashion retailing dynasties celebrate significant digits: Aldo turns 40 and Jacob turns 35.

The Aldo shoe and accessories empire began around the Montreal kitchen table of Aldo Bensadoun in 1972. Mr. B, as the founder is known, came up with a smash-hit clog based on an Italian design under the Aldo label that he sold at concessions inside fashion boutiques. Shoes run in the family: Bensadoun’s grandfather was a cobbler and his father had a chain of shoe stores in Morocco.

The first stand-alone Aldo shop sprouted in Montreal in 1978, followed by rapid expansion first across this country, then the U.S. with hundreds of stores. Today there are more than 1,600 stores in more than 72 countries on every continent save Antarctica. The stores outside of Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. are franchised, but the company remains privately held. Today Aldo’s son Douglas is the creative director and VP of marketing and son David is the president of Aldo Group.

“You can definitely say that I grew up with the brand,” Douglas says.

“My father started Aldo about nine months before I was born so I was pretty much conceived into it. No matter how you shake it, the truth is, this company has been a blessing for a lot of people, including my brother and I.”

For years before actually starting to work at Aldo, the company almost seemed to be following him, he says.

“I moved to Boston in 1992 for university, Aldo opened up its first U.S. store in Boston that year. I moved to L.A. in 1997 to start my career in filmmaking, Aldo opens up a year later in L.Madden Girl Black Patent Mary Jane Court christianlouboutinshoe.A. I moved to London in 2002 for a brand consulting gig, Aldo opens 3 months later on Oxford St. The company’s always been there, its presence always felt.”

Aldo’s flashy ad campaigns are shot by Terry Richardson starring top models like Jessica Stam and this year’s star Anais Pouliot. Recent innovations include Aldo Rise, which is a design collaboration limited edition series with designers such as Mark Fast and Preen, along with a gentleman’s boutique called Mr. B.

Celebrations for Aldo’s anniversary, including a retrospective exhibit run in Montreal from Oct. 11 to 21.

The clothing chain Jacob began at Joey Basmaji’s father’s clothing shop in Sorel, outside of Montreal. When Basmaji Jnr. was 18 he took over the family business following his father’s death.

In 1977, they launched Jacob as a shop that sold original designs, and the 1980s saw expansion to Canada’s major cities. Today there are 86 stores across the country, and the couple’s daughter Cristelle Basmaji, born three years after the brand’s debut, is now the director of marketing and communications. “I grew up along with the brand. We are a European-inspired company, with a classic look,” she says, of the company named after her grandfather “Sometimes people don’t realize we are Canadian. An anniversary year is our opportunity to communicate that message.”

Jacob is celebrating its anniversary year with the launch of a Heritage Collection, as well as a new jersey line.
