The search resulted in investigators finding marijuana

A week-long investigation by the Narcotics Division of the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office into a contraband smuggling operation ended with the arrest of a jailer and eight other suspects.

The investigation began when investigators were alerted to the possibility of contraband being smuggled into the jail by listening to recorded telephone calls made from within the jail, said Donnie Saucier, chief investigator.

“Investigators listening to jail phone calls intercepted plans of individuals wanting to smuggle contraband,” Saucier said.

On Saturday, investigators learned that Charlie W. Strahan, 69, of 165 First St., a correctional officer in the jail, was planning on receiving a package containing contraband to smuggle to inmates.

“Through investigation, investigators learned that Strahan was set to meet a Briana Lee, 18, of 02 R Fore Lane, at a public location in Carriere,” Saucier said.

Surveillance was set up at the location and Lee was observed actually meeting another female at the scene.

Lakisha Brown, 35, of 4715 Terrington Ct., Sugarland, Texas, was observed sitting in a vehicle with Lee, and the two appeared to be waiting on someone, said Saucier.

“At approximately 6 p.m. a vehicle pulled up, driven by Lenard Odom, 26.”

At that time, it appeared that a transfer of packages was about to take place. “Investigators then moved in before a transfer could occur and secured the three subjects,” Saucier said.

Three baby powder containers were found that had been emptied out and filled with a combination of “tobacco, marijuana, ecstasy pills, Lortab pills,Maybe you ever meet this situation that you are still struggling in looking for a good men dress facejacket. Investigators maintained a constant surveillance on Strahan’s pickup truck, Saucier said.

Strahan walked back to the jail, where investigators left their surveillance posts and placed him under arrest.

Schaefer said many people approach him at events and say they never had the chance to learn what their family member did in the war. It’s probably because members never asked, Schaefer said.

He said the World War II generation is often called “the greatest generation,” but Schaefer said there is a second title that fits that group.

The bell is an important part of Metis history

It looks like a significant piece of Canadian Metis history will soon be returned to public view after disappearing more than 20 years ago.

But one of the country’s top Metis leaders is not excited that the bell of Batoche may finally be brought back to its home in Saskatchewan.

David Chartrand, president of the Manitoba Metis Federation, says the historical significance of the bell has been tarnished by those who have held it for the last two decades and tried to sell it to the highest bidder.

“We’ve got an announcement prepared as to the bell, what’s going to happen to it and where it’s going to go,” said Savoie, who added the group has been negotiating with the bell’s keeper for a long time. “He’s disposed to return the bell and this is what the announcement is.”

The bell is an important part of Metis history and it should be treated accordingly, Savoie said.

“A bell is a living thing. It calls people to weddings. It calls people to baptisms, funerals, mass on Sunday.”

Philippe Mailhot, director of the St. Boniface Museum in Winnipeg, said for the bell for too long represented defeat and humiliation.

“It was sort of an open scar, especially for the Metis of Western Canada,” Mailhot said. “It’s bad enough your resistance is crushed by Canadian authorities, your leader Louis Riel is hanged and for 100 years the Metis are essentially shunted to the sidelines of history — the forgotten people.”
