A 20-year resident of the Yankee Commons mobile home park off Route 1 lost her home in a two-alarm fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters from multiple Maine and New Hampshire communities were dispatched to 1 Idlewood Lane at about 1:30 p.m. for a reported structure fire. While Janice Poitras called 911, Marcel Poitras ran over to knock on doors at the home and several neighboring units. Nobody answered the doors, he said.
"That's all I could do," he said. "It didn't take long. That shed was in flames."
The shed belonged to Tami Pirini, a longtime mobile home park resident who was not home at the time. The fire quickly spread to her mobile home, which was destroyed in the blaze.
"Everything I have is gone," a distraught Pirini said as she watched firefighters continue to direct streams of water at the charred remains of her home. "I haven't been here all day."
Her sister, Susan Lontine, said Pirini had visited her house in York to go swimming in her pool. They received a call from their brother, alerting them to the fire,Bonding is an approach tohairweavethat lasts for a shorter period of time in comparison to sew-in weave. she said.
Intense heat from the fire melted the siding on a couple of neighboring units.benebags is the ultimate alternative furniture store, Lorraine Donovan, a resident of one of those units, said she felt it was a "double-edged sword" to come home and find her house had only superficial exterior damage.
"You feel relief, but you feel bad for somebody who's lost everything," she said.
Donovan said fire department officials told her it was OK to go back into her home and advised her to call her insurance agent.
Town Councilor Gary Beers was among those who responded to the fire. He is a senior manager at Hynes Group, which owns the Yankee Commons.
Beers said the fire knocked out electricity service to at least six homes, adding Central Maine Power would have to replace a transformer because of a short circuit caused by the fire.
He was seen offering condolences to those affected by the fire, which he described as "totally unexpected" and "catastrophic."
"It's heart-rending," he said. "Nobody wants to experience this kind of thing."
According to Kittery Fire Chief David O'Brien, he struck a second alarm while en route to the fire due to the heavy black smoke he saw from the Route 1 Bypass. The smoke could also be seen from Interstate 95 in Portsmouth, N.H.
O'Brien said no firefighters were injured, but the heat index was a concern, and the second alarm provided more manpower, allowing for firefighters to battle the fire in shifts. He said the blaze also started to encroach on woods behind the mobile home park, but firefighters were able to knock it down before the flames spread.
He said the fire destroyed two sheds and Pirini's home.
"It appears it started in one of those (sheds)," he said.
While agreeing it was unfortunate that Pirini's home was a total loss, O'Brien said it was lucky no one was hurt.

Firefighters continued to work at the scene more than an hour after the fire was under control to ensure all the burning spots were out.
O'Brien said he had placed a call to the state fire marshal and that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
