“All of a sudden, there was no paycheck and no health insurance,” said Kerschbaum, now 66.
That was when the Mamaroneck resident re-imagined his life, one centered on his passion for antique clocks. Kerschbaum, a trained horologist, opened up his first store in Scarsdale, where he sold and repaired clocks and watches.
“But then the recession came and the sales pretty much dried up,” he said. “So we quickly downsized, and moved into a 200-square-foot space in Hartsdale.”
Kerschbaum said he decided to concentrate solely on repairs. That focus seems to have paid off. In June, he moved his business to Larchmont,Nothing flatters the foot like a beautifully made sandalwomenssandals. tripling the shop’s footprint, and featuring a dedicated space for sales. Among his many clients now is Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
A caller asking to repair a mid-18th-century English grandfather clock, much to Kerschbaum’s surprise and delight, turned out to be the governor.
The clock had been a gift from his father — former Gov. Mario Cuomo — that had been delivered to Washington, when he was appointed Housing and Urban Development secretary in 1997, under the Clinton administration.
When Cuomo left Washington, it remained in storage for a number of years.
Kerschbaum said he delivered the repaired clock to the governor’s house in New Castle.
