“Outside of Black Friday and Christmas, it’s one of our biggest weekends of the year,” Dustin Lee, Eagle Eye Outfitters store manager said.
Johnnie Golden, Ronnie’s Men’s and Boy’s Wear manager, said his store typically sees sales increases of up to 50 percent. Golden said the event helps his store sell off summer merchandise to prepare for the fall.
Although sales taxes aren’t being collected on the school related items, the revenue loss for the state is offset by increased sales of non-exempt items as economic activity increases during the holiday weekend, Alison Wingate, vice president of the Alabama Retail Association, said.
Wingate said sales tax collections for the month of August have increased each of the six years the sales tax holiday has been held except for one.

Wingate said an added benefit of the holiday is increased work hours for retail employees, which allows them to bring home bigger paychecks.
“Everyone’s looking for more hours these days,” she said.
