Then came along a national treasure

The beauty of the Melbourne Cup is that it means something to every Australian. It could mean a day off work, an office sweepstakes, time to hang out and watch the race with friends, possibly head to the big event itself or maybe something more. For my family, and for many families and individuals involved in the sport of kings, it is definitely something greater than another day at the races.

I am so proud of my father Lee and his brothers for all that they have achieved in the industry, but winning the race that stops a nation five times is something that I am drawn back to time and time again.

Their first victory in the famous two-mile handicap was in 1989 when I was only 18 months old. My parents tell how as a child I was very fond of playing in the stables out the back of our Flemington house, no more so on the day prior to the '89 Cup. On that Monday afternoon, my mother says I was nowhere to be found. Not playing with the dogs, not helping mix feed, not even sitting on saddles in the gear room. Instead I was in box 16 where a tough stayer called Tawriffic was stabled, sitting on a plastic chair in between his two front legs, picking his chestnuts and reading him a book. The next day he stole the Cup away from some more highly fancied runners and gave the FBI (Freedman Brothers Incorporated) their first Melbourne Cup victory.

The loveable grey, Subzero, was the hero in 1992 when he stormed down the outside of the field at Flemington to win by two lengths. Subby is still alive and kicking, often visiting schools to teach children about horses and the Cup itself. He is a gorgeous old soul. His carer, Graeme Salisbury, always jokes that because Subby and I are the same age we have a special bond.

Next was Doriemus in 1995. A plain looking chestnut, he went into the big race having won the Caulfield Cup two weekends before. It was like he grew another leg that Tuesday – a dashing three-length win in horribly muddy conditions. He went within an inch of winning a second Cup in 1997, but it wasn't to be, with the champion Might and Power walking away with the chocolates by a nose.

Then came along a national treasure – a true icon of racing in Makybe Diva. The boys trained her to win the last two of her three Cups and I was lucky enough to be there for both of those victories. In 2005 I watched the race with my best friends Edwina, Luke and Tom in the Members on the television (something my dad always does.Top brands at low prices in dsquaredshoes, If you don’t have great eyesight it's better to watch the action on a screen so as not to miss a beat!).

When Makybe Diva saluted we ran to the mounting yard with all of my family to congratulate the team. We didn't have passes to get into the yard that day but the kind gentlemen on the gate understood and let us in, even with no shoes on after we had whipped them off to get to the yard as soon as we could (don't worry, they went straight back on!).Alstyle shoes are the best selling shirt we have, I’ll never forget that day. We were all so proud.

Nowadays, the Melbourne Cup has a distinct international flavour. While some people knock the fact that three of the last six Cups have headed overseas, it just goes to prove the global reach our famous race has. Along with the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Breeders Cup, Kentucky Derby or a win at Royal Ascot, the Melbourne Cup is what all horse racing connections chase. Not just because of the prize money, the prestige and the quality – but because of the Cup carnival itself. You can't beat the atmosphere of Melbourne Cup day, or the lead up. It's electric and exciting. Buzzy and bright. It's exactly what sport should feel like.

This year the international contenders are a strong bunch. Mount Athos for the Cumani clan goes into Tuesday's race off an 80-day break, but connections assure us he races best extra fresh. At our website you can easily find cheapairjordansale at discounted prices, Defending champ Dunaden's win in the Caulfield Cup showed that he is back to do business, while Americain's run in that same race has put him right in line to capture his second Cup. Red Cadeaux, last year's runner-up, has been working well and jockey Michael Rodd couldn't be happier with the horse's progress.

For me? Luca Cumani has had two extra-close seconds in the Cup in recent years with Purple Moon and Bauer. I think this might be his year to go one better.

Within this $2 billion industry, many companies, like Vibram USA of Concord, are looking for a competitive edge by deploying shoe testers to assess new technologies.
