Veterans Affairs Canada has been working with veterans organizations in the Ottawa area to ensure that all eras and branches of the service — including the merchant navy and nursing sisters — are represented.

The war brides will represent a flood of nearly 45,000 British and European women who left everything to start new lives in postwar Canada. Though they came from nearly every European country, 93 per cent were British.

The reception is the highlight of a 75-minute visit by the duke and duchess that will include a tour of major exhibits in the six-year-old war museum. Staff have been working for months to ensure all the exhibits are looking their best, said spokeswoman Chantal Schryer.

“We’re extremely proud to have been chosen as the site for the visit,” Schryer said. “Everybody is really looking forward to it.”
