The public are advised to keep photographs of jewellery

Police are warning Winnipeggers to be wary of anyone offering gold jewellery for sale on city streets—the offer may be too good to be true.

Police said Thursday they’ve received several reports over the last month of people who’ve taken the offer only to later learn the gold is fake.

In one reported case a man was approached by a male suspect in the Westwood area who said he needed money, clothing and fuel to get his young family back to Toronto.

Believing the story, the victim invited the suspect and his family back to his home where he gave them clothing and offered to fill their car with gas.

The victim has since learned the gold jewellery is fake.

The male suspect who initially approached the victim is described as 30-35 years old, roughly 5’4” tall,With the multitude of fake cartierreplicawatches on the internet, 170-180 lbs., with a dark complexion and a light brown goatee. He was wearing a baseball hat, brown jacket and light coloured jeans.

Homeowners are being urged to ensure all doors and windows are locked – especially at night.

Almost a third of burglaries take place at homes where doors and windows are unlocked.

PC Clive Vickery of Honiton Police Station said: “With more hours of darkness, when people are out or at work, doing the Christmas shopping or picking up the kids from after-school clubs, there is more opportunity for criminals to target vulnerable homes for burglary.

“People should make sure their windows and doors are always locked when they leave home. Even when at home, people should never leave open or unlocked windows and doors unattended.”

He added: “Use a timer when leaving the house or going away on holiday. Don’t leave valuable items like computers, laptops, phones, wallets, car keys or jewellery on display.
