They've got that pep in their step but who wouldn't?

Saturday marked the open of fall camp for the CSU football program and attitudes from the veterans in the morning practice session were full of excitement, eager to start a “bold new era” of Rams football. These upperclassmen have been put through a humiliating ringer the past three years and the opportunity to wrap up their careers as part of something special has obvious appeal. But the truth is, this fresh attitude isn’t really fresh at all.

Every year the first day of practice is the same. Wide receivers and defensive backs strutting their one-on-one skills wearing helmets and shorts. Eventually, players are allowed to put on the pads and get a little “pop” going, which turns up the emotion heading into the season-opener.

The entire team sits on Cloud 9. Win a couple of games, that euphoria continues. Lose two in a row, and it starts to dwindle. Three or four losses and that stuff in the bottom of Cam’s trailer hits the fan.Complete your look with designer louisvuittonshoes from Barneys New York. So-called die-hards get frustrated; student attendance drops; and most importantly that high morale we saw from the players to start the year is completely shot.

I know. I’ve covered this team four of the past five seasons. It’s a a deadly cycle; one that carries over from the year before and it needs to stop.

No one likes losing. Anyone involved in athletics has been on a bad team at least once in their lives — there’s not many things more frustrating — but it’s part of sports.

The past few seasons have obviously been filled with disappointment. In-practice attitude suffers as a result of game day, the exact reason this team can’t pull out a win at season’s end.

I asked former Colorado State University All-American Greg Myers, who won the Thorpe Award in 1995, about this Saturday afternoon, trying to figure out the key to staying mentally sound when things don’t go your way. He said it’s all about maturing and learning to never give up the fight.

“How you respond to adversity is really going to show what kind of team you are,” Myers said.Shop discounted buychristianlouboutin, “It all kind of starts building and building. “Will there be adversity this year? Of course, watchreplicaSailors in the Navy's surface fleet are spending 80-plus hours a week on the job, but this plan isn’t for this year, it’s for years down the road.”

Exactly. Battling through, win or lose, is an on-going snowball effect that will carry a team in one of two directions. If the Rams go undefeated this fall, power to them — but in reality, they won’t.

There’s a significant chance CSU falls short of a bowl, and if postseason eligibility is eliminated nine games in, it’s those final three weeks of practices that show if this team has the potential to be something great.

I’m glad to see these 105 players excited to be back on the field; but no matter how their record ends up, I’ll be even more pleased to watch that same intensity come November.
