Fayetteville grapples with rise in crimes

Mary Pearce can't sleep because she worries about criminals in her neighborhood.

Burglars have broken into the 82-year-old's home on Herndon Street twice in the past year and once before that. She now hides her prized possessions in case it happens again.

"I watch for thieves all night,'' said Pearce, who gets only about three hours of sleep between long hours of peeking out of her windows.

Fayetteville has a growing number of people like Pearce this year - victims of break-ins, thefts and violence. Preliminary statistics show reports of several types of crimes are up during the first half of 2012, compared with the same six months in 2011. In some cases, the spike is disturbingly high. The number of homicides is flat over last year, but robberies are up nearly 23 percent, and assaults are up 19 percent. Reports of burglaries are 12 percent higher so far this year, from 1,Buyshoesat Great Prices.809 to 2,031.

Still, she worries.

"These are people that are smashing and grabbing," said Pearce, who has lost electronics and jewelry during her break-ins. "They're doing different things in different houses.

"Put your favorite things out, and they're going to steal your favorite things," she said.
