The Shivaji Park police arrested Mendonca

Deputy Tourism Minister Tokozile Xasa sponsored the students to be trained in jewellery design in Beijing.

The group, aged between 19 and 29, left on Friday. They are the third group to be offered this opportunity, which includes training by the Beijing-based SA Vaal Star Diamond Company for six months.

Zamakholo Masina, 22, of Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, was keen to be in the media industry after obtaining a diploma in public relations and communications at the Walter Sisulu University in Eastern Cape, But, her business background has opened new possibilities for her.

"I am interested to learn about the jewellery industry and manufacturing could lead me to starting my own business," Masina said.

This, being her first trip out of the country, Masina said when she was selected she became scared about having to leave home. But now she is more than ready.

"I'm really excited, these kinds of opportunities don't come around often. I cried with my mother just the other day, but it's all worth it."

The youngest of six children, Masina said she was confident she would stand out for achieving what she has. As a young citizen, she was concerned that most of the time, "we complain about being unemployed but never think of starting our own businesses".

Xasa's spokesman, Singabakho Nxumalo, said they approached Vaal Star Diamond, who were already training interns from around the world, to give a chance to South African students.

He said the training was not specifically for art or design students but for those who were willing to learn about the trade.
