The mysteries surrounding the death of hotels matriarch Eve Schwartz have transfixed Sydney this month.

The coronial inquest into the 79-year-old's death in 2005 heard tales of a death certificate signed by her son,We have a record for a owonsmart living at an address. cosmetic surgeon Jerry Schwartz, as well as strange death-bed photos and a bitter falling out with a former lover.

It has raised questions about whether the matriarch really ''passed peacefully'' at her home and the strange behaviour of her son after her death. The inquiry also investigated the death of Eve's best friend Magda Wales about three weeks later.

He is adamant he did nothing wrong and has no regrets about treating his mother or writing her death certificate - a practice frowned upon in the medical profession - saying he would do it again.

In a doctor's scrawl, Dr Schwartz listed the cause of his mother's death as ''anoxia, collapsed left lung, metastatic adenocarcinoma of lung''. The certificate did not mention what counsel assisting the commission Mark Higgins described as ''slash wounds'' on her wrists.

It is not clear whether these injuries contributed to Ms Schwartz's death but in his opening address Mr Higgins said the wrist injuries were significant.

''What was the basis for Dr Schwartz concluding the cause of death given … the wrist injuries, the absence of blood loss, the issue of whether the injuries were self-inflicted, [and] the question of whether the injuries were inflicted post-mortem?'' Mr Higgins said.

Seated at the dining room table in his renovated Vaucluse mansion, Dr Schwartz said he believes the slash wounds were only ''scratches''.

A series of photos that show Dr Schwartz holding his dead mother's hands, seemingly displaying her wrists to the camera were submitted as evidence during the inquest.

At the inquest, Dr Schwartz's barrister submitted there were doubts about the extent of any wrist injuries, pointing to other witnesses who he said had noticed nothing unusual about the mother's wrists after her death.Browse all Instagram photos tagged with jewelryfindings.

The Schwartz Group, which the surgeon inherited, owns luxury hotels across Australia, including the Rydges Hotel at World Square and the Crowne Plaza at the Hunter Valley. The life Dr Schwartz lives in his Vaucluse home - with panoramic views of Parsley Bay and a living room with fish swimming under the glass bottomed floor - is far removed from the patients he treats at his Marrickville clinic.
