"What we saw there was nothing like any of us North Carolinians had ever experienced," Gailes said. "The village was nothing more than dirt and mud and make-shift shacks -- dirty water, livestock and malnourished children, with no clothes and shoes."

As they made their way to a missionary church and school in the village, they were met by a group of about 100 children and adults who welcomed them, with what Gailes described as "great excitement and anticipation."

The following week was life-changing, Gailes said, but not only for the people they served.

And while there can be no argument that the right to bear arms is written into the Constitution, we cannot keep pretending that this right is somehow without limit, even as we place reasonable limits on arguably more valuable rights like the freedom of speech and due process.

No one argues that it should be legal to shout “fire” in a crowded theater; we accept this limit on our right to speak freely because of its obvious real-world consequences. Many victims never stand a chance against a dangerously armed assailant, and there’s scant evidence that being armed themselves would help.
