Crime prevention starts with common sense

Not because they were chatting loudly, oblivious to their surroundings, but because I saw one of them putting her handbag on the table where they were seated in the clear view of others.

It seemed like they had been missing out on news on snatch thefts and how not to become a victim. Who would the girl blame if someone had snatched her bag and run off with it?

Even though I have faith in our police force, I believe that I should take care of myself first.

One day, while walking to my office, a driver pulled up by the roadside. Thinking that it might be someone I knew, I stopped to take a look. As the man's face was not familiar, I continued walking but the car kept following me.

I slipped into the back lane of the row of shops to shake the driver off but to my horror, I saw his car coming towards me.

I decided to head for a nearby coffee shop, which had its back door open. The Best Store to buy authenticguccishoes online. Before I could take a step through the back door, the car was already by my side and I froze in fear. The driver called out to me and said that he just wanted to give me his phone number. I remained calm and then quickly told him that I needed to go and hurried into the coffee shop.

I was just glad that he didn't follow me inside.Panerai replica watches, cheaprolexwatches, replica omega, Sure, it'd be great if there were a police patrol car passing by or a friend walking with me at that time.Shop Louis omegawatch for Women. But in such a situation, you can only depend on yourself.

I try not to walk in secluded areas, avoid going out late at nights alone and only wear sensible clothes and shoes.

To say that the authorities are not doing anything, for me, is unfair. What is unfair is when criminals prey on hapless victims and commit crimes right under our noses.

What is unfair is when people blame others for their own carelessness by not taking precautions for their own safety.

During my stint as a court reporter, I saw countless offenders being put away for robbery and theft and some for causing harm.Find guccishoes and dsquared shoes men from a vast selection of Clothing,

Brickfields district police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bahri Wan Abdul Khalid made a point when he asked what should be done when a criminal was caught red-handed, during his dialogue with residents there.

He said although a crime was avoided, how could the offender be "punished" so that he would not do it again.

He said there were cases where the offenders had to be let off as the witnesses' statements and description of what they saw were insubstantial.

You see, pointing fingers doesn't help to curb crimes and blaming others including the authorities doesn't make us the better people.

Many programmes by government agencies and non-governmental organisations have been carried out to show us that that crime prevention does not involve only the police, but also public engagement.

Bandar Tun Razak Education Foundation's effort, in collaboration with the police, Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation and Information Department, to distribute crime prevention pamphlets to the public in the area is laudable.

The booklet gives tips on how to be safe both for children and adult, and since reading the pamphlet, I realised I have not taken all the necessary precautions.

Among them are to walk with a friend and avoid deserted and quiet areas; never leave the car engine running if unattended and putting your belongings out of sight, preferably in the car boot; not placing your wallet or handbag in the shopping trolley; keeping your handbag close to you at all times; and for your house, consider using timer to switch on and off the lights which is most helpful when you are not around.

For those using public transport, choose a busy bus stand or station and avoid waiting at a poorly-lit places or deserted spots.

It is also best to train children to only go out if accompanied by their parents or if they are with friends, come home before it gets dark; wait in the school compound instead of by the roadside if their transport is late in picking them up; never accept anything from a stranger and inform their parents if they see a crime or notice something amiss around them. I hope that we can all play a part in crime prevention by using some common sense first.

The issue has divided officers with decades of experience

The police station that watches over this sleepy town of 10,000 was built as if to reassure residents that nothing terrible could ever happen here.

Three stories tall with sea foam green walls and bright yellow railings, the building cost the city $2.1 million. But come Election Day on Nov. 6, the police force it houses could be voted out of existence. We Specialize In Selling royaloak,

For this small seaside town, having its own Police Department has always been a declaration of independence.

But it is also a financial burden — one that has dragged St.Authorised authenticbreitlingwatches Stockists. Large Mens Breitling Watch range. Pete Beach residents into the middle of an emotional debate over whether to keep their hometown force. The alternative, which has been contemplated as far back as 1978, is to pay the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office for protection.

Doing so would save the city an estimated $1.3 million after several years of declining tax revenue. The City Commission had to raise tax rates this year to close a budget hole.

The Sheriff's Office also would give the city access to specialized units for marine patrols, murder investigations and gang monitoring.

"We're a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico" with a small force, said police Sgt. Chris Centofanti, a 20-year department veteran. "The reality of that is, it's cute, it looks nice on postcards, but it has its limitations."

The St. Pete Beach Police Department has always been small, but the past few years of budget cuts have winnowed it down further. Today, the 25-member department has five sergeants and 17 officers. Its two detectives and one captain handle everything from harassing phone calls to the occasional homicide.

The department owns one boat and one motorcycle.Alstyle shoes are the best selling shirt we have, When it needs to analyze crime scene evidence or transport a prisoner to the county jail, it calls the sheriff.

Yet the department's supporters point out that there are small tasks the St. Pete Beach officers perform that sheriff's deputies might not do as readily.

Police Chief David Romine said that when his officers encounter a lost dog, they bring it to the police station, not Animal Services. In the station's downstairs are cages and dog food, enough to content a pet until its owner arrives.

"The vast majority of the people of this community have never had to call for police service," Romine said. "They really don't have a handle on the level of service the agency like this provides."

Romine thinks it is important for a city, however small, to maintain its own police force. He calculated that in three months, 107 people walked into the police headquarters on 76th Avenue to report an incident.

City Manager Mike Bonfield said that under the sheriff, a community police officer and a deputy would have offices at City Hall, where residents could meet with them.

"But they wouldn't necessarily be there from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days a week," he said.

The city doesn't know what it would do with the station, which was built in 1995.

Most of the calls that come into the St. Pete Beach Police Department are tourism-related — restaurant patrons who walk away without paying, vacationing couples who have a few drinks and turn combative, and regular barroom brawlers.

After 20 years on the force,A Professional louboutinshoe Shopping Center providing. Centofanti can easily distinguish between the night shift security guard at the Tradewinds hotel and a burglar, a skill someone new to the area might not have.

Yet Centofanti and his colleagues are surprisingly unsentimental about the chance their department will be disbanded.

"To the residents, this is an emotional decision," he said. "To the cops, it's an economic issue."

If voters decide to keep the department intact, the city and police union have already agreed to a less generous pension plan that has prompted officers to dust off their resumes.

Instead of working 25 years and receiving a pension that's 80 percent of their final salary, they would be required to work 30 years. At the end, they would get about 37 percent of their final pay and whatever they have contributed to a 401(k)-like plan.

Like many in his position, Bruce Johnson, a 10-year veteran, would prefer to work for Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. The sheriff's pension plan is far better, he said, and he and the other officers would all be offered jobs there if voters close their department.

"But now I have to work until I'm 60 years old," he said. "Carrying a gun, jumping fences, getting into bar fights … The chances of me staying here until I hit 30 years are very, very slim."

The issue has divided officers with decades of experience from new employees. When it came time for them to vote on disbanding the department, 14 approved it, nine voted no.

Centofanti, who is five years away from retirement, was among the no's. It's in his financial interest to stay under the new pension plan and cash out soon. Still, he worries what will happen to the department if voters refuse to close it. Young officers will look elsewhere, he predicted, and job applicants will dwindle.

His advice to St. Pete Beach taxpayers: "If you're going to keep it, fund it. Fund it properly. And if you don't have the money, then get rid of it."

swath of the eastern seaboard begins to recover

Listening to news reports Tuesday about the widespread destruction from Hurricane Sandy, Scott Holmquist first reacted with shock at the disaster that had ravaged cities throughout the east coast. He said a prayer, thanking God that he was safely out of harm's way at his home in Asheville, N.C. And then he did something that would puzzle many Americans: he packed his bags and Bibles, hopped in a van with two fellow Christians and drove north all day with the goal of making it to the badly damaged New Jersey coast by the next morning.

Their aim: to assist victims in everything from clearing debris and mud from homes to getting food and, more uniquely, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to comfort the spiritually afflicted.

"Having been the recipient of so much in my life, I just feel like God is putting a care for others into our hearts," said Holmquist, 55, one of three teams of chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team that have been dispatched from North Carolina to the northeast. "To be a part of that emotional and spiritual care in other peoples lives who have been devastated by this hurricane and now bigger-than-hurricane aftermath, it's so important."

As a wide swath of the eastern seaboard begins to recover from what's estimated to be at least $20 billion in hurricane-related damages, the help is pouring in. Federal recovery dollars are being funneled to state agencies, nonprofits are accepting donations, first responders are caring for the injured and neighbors are helping neighbors.Find the largest selection of discount luxury watches including piagetwatches, But on top of that, people of faith -- locals and non-locals alike -- are slowly trickling into affected neighborhoods, offering aid of their own kind. Some groups, such as in the one Holmquist is in, aim to not only tend to the physical damage, but the spiritual pain, as well. Others, such as Islamic Relief U.S.A.Find shoesbb from a vast selection of Women's Shoes., which has set up shelters New Brunswick, N.J., and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which maintains food storehouses across the U.S., are motivated by faith but keep their services secular. Other faith-based organizations, such as the Jewish Federations of North America and Catholic Charities, both which have offices in cities across the U.Wholesale dgshoessale from Low Price Agate beads,S., have launched large-scale efforts to solicit donations for disaster relif.

For Holmquist, who was trained as a chaplain five years ago by the organization that is run by Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son, this is his second time he has rushed to help after a national tragedy. After the devastating movie theater shooting earlier this year in Aurora, Colo., he and his team were on site to pray with victims. About 10 chaplains from the organization plan to set up camp in New Jersey and Pennsylvania this week, with more possibly on their way. They'll meet with workers from Samaritan's Purse, a disaster relief organization Franklin Graham also runs.

"Sadly, it seems that the worst fears were realized and millions of people are now hurting as a result of Hurricane Sandy. I'm not sure that there are words that can adequately describe the enormity of this massive disaster," said Jack Munday, international director of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, who is also being deployed to his childhood home of Cape May, N.J. "We'll do all we can in the face of this catastrophe to offer emotional and spiritual care and the hope and compassion of Jesus Christ."

With natural disasters often come prayer gatherings and faith-based charity efforts. After all, one of the best-known relief organizations, the Salvation Army, is also a Christian denomination. But in places such as New York City, where entire neighborhoods have flooded and public transit has been shuttered, so too have many churches that would normally offer a helping hand. Trinity Wall Street, a large and popular Episcopal church in downtown Manhattan that also runs a senior citizens' housing center, remained closed Tuesday. The Interchurch Center on the city's Upper West Side, where more than a dozen faith-based organizations maintain offices, has also temporarily shut its doors. Sexual harassment spikes over Egyptian holiday

Egypt's president acknowledged the widespread problem of sexual harassment in his country Tuesday, ordering his interior minister to investigate a rash of assaults during a just-completed Muslim holiday.

Mohammed Morsi acted after his government reported 735 police complaints about sexual harassment over the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, which ended Monday. What we see and hear enough of, we buy christianlouboutinshoe into – often.

Morsi stressed the need to fight "all phenomena of moral chaos and abuses, especially harassment in Egyptian streets," spokesman Yasser Ali said in a statement.

The holiday features celebrations, crowded public squares — and widespread harassment of women by men.

Rights activists have faulted Morsi's Islamist government for failing to take action against the wave of sexual assaults. Earlier this month, around 200 activists gathered outside the presidential palace, chanting slogans against Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood pressing for a law to criminalize harassment. Morsi's order Tuesday appeared to be an attempt to counter the charges of activists.

Complaints about the problem, which has long been a feature of Egypt's society, gained prominence during last year's popular uprising that unseated longtime President Hosni Mubarak. Women activists and reporters told of severe assaults by men in Tahrir Square, the focus of the mass protests.

A prominent activist, Azza Suleiman, told the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper Tuesday that her two sons were assaulted in downtown Cairo during the holiday while trying to protect a group of foreigners, while police stood by watching the incident.Amazing prices on hublotwatch from over 100 leading watch brands including. Tahrir Square, the center of last year's uprising, has been the scene of a number of assaults against women — both protesters and journalists — in the aftermath of the revolution. Earlier this month, a correspondent for France 24 TV was "savagely attacked" near Tahrir after being seized by a crowd, the network said.

Last week, Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil condemned sexual harassment in remarks on his Facebook page,Top brands at low prices in dsquaredshoes, calling it a "catastrophe" that threatens society. Rights activists have been campaigning for such legislation for years.

Dr. Hani Henry, a psychology professor at the American University in Cairo, said that the widespread notion that women should dress more conservatively in order to reduce sexual harassment on Egypt's streets is one of the biggest impediments to addressing the issue.

"There's a 'blaming the victim' mentality," Hany said. He predicted that addressing sexual harassment in Egypt's could be more difficult now that Islamists have emerged as the strongest political power in post-revolutionary Egypt.

The authorities take immediate action

Ahmad Yusni Ahmad Yahaya, 44, who has been a taxi driver for eight years said taxi drivers have to pay a daily rental to the taxi company, depending on the type of car they use.

"An old Saga budget taxi's rent is about RM30 while the new Saga's rent is RM40. It depends on the agreement made between the taxi drivers and taxi company. Different types of cars come with different rent charges.

"Some of the challenges we have to face include traffic congestion, bad weather, flash floods as well as dealing with difficult passengers. If an accident or a breakdown occurs, we have to bear the maintenance cost," said Yusni.

A taxi driver who declined to be named said he would select his passengers.

"I don't remember how many times passengers have refused to pay and rushed out without paying. I experienced that many times with foreigners in Taman Connaught and Cheras. If I see these people flagging me down, I will ignore them," he said.

Vanderbilt then overwhelmed the Minutemen

Jordan Rodgers threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead Vanderbilt to a 49-7 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday night.

Sluggish most of the penalty-filled first half, the Commodores (4-4) broke open a seven-point game with two late first-half touchdowns in 55 seconds. They added four touchdowns in the third quarter to claim successive wins for the first time since starting 3-0 last year.

Along with an interception return for a score by Trey Wilson, Jonathan Krause returned a punt 40 yards to the end zone. It marked the first time a Vanderbilt punt return went the distance since 1999.

Massachusetts (0-8) remains winless in its first year in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Vanderbilt running back Zac Stacy, the school's all-time rushing leader, exited five minutes into the game with an injury. He later returned to the sideline wearing a splint on his right ankle.

Leading just 7-0, Rodgers helped wake up the Commodores with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kris Kentera with 1:53 left in the first half. After a fumble by UMass on the ensuing kickoff, Rodgers took advantage of a short field. He rushed in for a 4-yard touchdown to give Vanderbilt a 21-0 lead with 58 seconds to go before halftime.guccimenshoes, belt in our Louis Vuitton outlet is you best choice!

Vanderbilt then overwhelmed the Minutemen, scoring four touchdowns in a five-minute span in the third quarter.

Rodgers started the scoring flurry with a 14-yard touchdown to Chris Boyd. Only Tennessee's Jackie Walker has returned more interceptions for touchdowns, scoring five from 1969-71.

Vanderbilt entered with a Southeastern Conference-low five turnovers but forced three against UMass.

Highly-touted freshman Brian Kimbrow showed off his electrifying speed on a 74-yard touchdown. He finished with 98 yards on seven carries but also fumbled.

Krause capped off the scoring by taking a short punt and sprinting 40 yards untouched to the end zone for a 49-0 lead with 1:05 left in the third quarter. The last Vanderbilt player to score on a punt return was Jimmy Williams, who had a 65-yard return against Northern Illinois on Sept. 11, 1999.

UMass snapped a streak of seven scoreless quarters when A.J. Doyle threw a 10-yard strike to Deion Walker with 6:05 remaining.

Vanderbilt played undisciplined on its opening drive. The Commodores committed six penalties for 50 yards to stall a drive that ended with a pooch punt by Rodgers. Three offensive linemen drew flags, including a 15-yard penalty on center Joe Townsend for an illegal chop block. An illegal shift followed for a first-and-30 at Vanderbilt's own 38, leading to a timeout by coach James Franklin.

That didn't stop the mental errors. Five offensive linemen committed penalties and Vanderbilt tied a season-high with 11 penalties for 80 yards.

The biggest loss, however, came when Stacy went down hard after catching a screen pass and had to be helped off the field.

Krause's 28-yard punt return - then a season-high - set up the first score. Two plays later, Wesley Tate broke off for a 25-yard touchdown. Tate spun off a tackle and trotted inside the far pylon for a 7-0 lead with 5:34 left in the first quarter. He finished with a career-high 81 yards on 15 carries - all in the first half.

After gaining possession on a failed fourth-and-1 try by Vanderbilt, UMass also gambled. Instead of kicking a field goal, Jordan Broadnax was stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Vanderbilt 9-yard line. The Minuteman also failed to convert a fourth-and-4 on their next possession. The Commodores capitalized, marching 72 yards in eight plays. The Swiss watch brand Gc, a sister marque of Guess, sees great potential in Asia and forecasts a sales contribution surpassing that of Europe and North America by 2017.

Give kids more time not money

"All I've got at home is one pony and two dogs and four cats and six bunny rabbits and two parakeets and three canaries and a green parrot and a turtle, and a silly old hamster! I WANT A SQUIRREL!" — Veruca Salt

In the history of television and movies, there have been many a spoiled child, but my favorite example of all time is Veruca Salt from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Veruca Salt had everything. Her parents never said no, and she was miserable and so were her parents. They said yes so much because they thought it would make her happy, but it never did. They gave her everything money could buy, but there are a few things money can't buy, and that's where Charlie Bucket comes in.

Charlie Bucket had nothing. Sure you felt sorry for him, but by the time the movie was over, there wasn't a person watching who didn't want a Charlie Bucket. I wanted a Charlie Bucket and still do.

But a Charlie Bucket who cares for his parents and grandparents and is morally aware; well, that kind of kid takes work, not money.

You can't buy that kind of kid; you've got to earn him.

They say life imitates art, and it seems that these days life is imitating a lot more Veruca Salts than Charlie Buckets.

I never once felt like I had to buy my kids anything or like I owed them, which was convenient because I was poor. Now that I have a few more coppers to rub together,What we see and hear enough of, we buy christianlouboutinshoe into – often. I still don't feel like I owe them anything.

I don't owe them summer camp or a Nintendo DS.

I don't owe them travel soccer or extravagant birthday parties.

I don't owe them Coca-Cola in the fridge or a new Redskins jersey.

I don't owe them college tuition, a new car or unlimited texting.

I take that back, I do owe them something and that is love and guidance and a roof over their heads.

I know parents who want their kids to want for nothing. They don't want to damage their self-esteem by having them feel left out or feeling like they might have less than someone else.

Well, guess what, my kids don't have everything, and I am happy for it.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against money. Money can be an awesome thing.

In fact, I could really use some of it right now to help with my son's college bill, which I don't owe him but am more than willing to help with.

Battle in the saddle on weekend

Participants in a stationary cycling challenge were putting a positive spin on the fight against cancer on the weekend.

The first Battle in the Saddle was held at Heritage Place Shopping Centre on Saturday. Three teams of 8-10 riders raised money for research into breast, ovarian and cervical cancer. More than $3,000 was raised from the event, which saw team members take turns riding stationary bikes for 10 hours straight.

For Karen Garvie of Owen Sound, the event was a chance to help the Canadian Cancer Society after it helped her.

Garvie was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2011. While receiving treatment in Kitchener she stayed at a lodge minutes away from the hospital.

She is also in a 10-year breast cancer study which has an aim of reducing the amount of radiation treatment people have to go through.

"You just have to give back when you have been helped," said Garvie. "Any money that goes into cancer can only help this community, to come up with a potential cure or treatment that is going to make people's lives a better quality."

Garvie has had surgery and radiation treatment and is now on cancer drugs for five years.

She said many others taking part in Saturday's event were taking part for personal reasons as well.

Jennifer Wright, fundraising coordinator with the Bluewater Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society said the hope is to make the event an annual one. She said she was happy to have three teams at this year's event — Payless Shoes, Sportmakers and the Zonta Club of Owen Sound were entered — and hopes to grow bigger next year. Sportmakers supplied the stationary bikes for the day.

Wright said they decided on the Battle in the Saddle event because it was something different and it is a way to show people how they can reduce the risks of cancer by being healthy. The rolexwatchesschool district.

There are coin boxes at businesses throughout the area where people can make a donation and get a pink ribbon to wear. The Cancer Society was also to hand out information at the Owen Sound Attack game on Sunday.

Wright said about $15,000 was raised last year during the month of October. This year she hopes to raise between $18,000 and $20,000 for the month, a goal she expects to reach.

As he stood on the field at MetLife Stadium talking to Marlboro’s Dante Cano, who emerged as the state’s most famous fifth-grader last week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell looked back on the first time he read the short, hand-written letter from the 11-year-old.

“I really felt sort of foolish because I wish I had thought of it,” said Goodell, arguably the most powerful sports figure in this country.

Moments earlier, Cano’s suggestion became a reality when he presented pink penalty flags that were used on Sunday’s game between the Jets and Miami Dolphins to the officiating crew, led by referee Walt Anderson.

And so continued the whirlwind week for Cano, who, back on Oct. 11, after seeing all the pink worn by players during the Giants-Cleveland Browns game as part of breast cancer awareness month, decided to write a letter to Goodell.

About an hour before kickoff, Cano,My review of paneraireplica finds a company with a friendly staff, his parents Jose and Laura, his 14-year-old sister Nikki, wheelchair-bound due to Aicardi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, and 9-year-old sister Danielle, were down on the playing field shortly after arriving, before being whisked off to a suite to watch the game.

“I thought of penalty flags, they’re used a lot, and they could be used to raise awareness,” said Cano, who sent his letter off to the league’s Park Avenue offices in New York, where it was opened by an assistant who handles Goodell’s mail, and then placed on his desk.

But having gotten the NFL to take heed of his suggestion, he seemed pretty confident he could get his elementary school to reschedule for later in the week.

As children with a bullying instinct are typically defendant

The best prescription for keeping a child safe and less susceptible to bullying is in fostering relationships with adults to provide the proper nurturing and direction needed until they become their own person, according to a Canadian child behavioral specialist.

Speaking on the subject of “Making sense of bullying” in a recent presentation in the Vancouver suburb city of Burnaby, Dr. Deborah MacNamara, a faculty member of the Neufeld Institute, said about one in five children have shown bullying tendencies in North America and the phenomena remains a mystery.

“Our top researchers in the field, in the world,Find edhardyshoes from the latest collection。 are still baffled, and no one can make sense of the bully from this perspective,” she said. “We are still trying to understand what this is. So we have to be patient. We have to take responsibility and we have to lead.”

In her presentation to parents and students at a local high school, MacNamara talked about the rise of the “alpha complex” among children. Typical signs of such behavior include being bossy, controlling, demanding, showing superiority, being a know-it-all and driven to trump interaction, among others.

She added it’s “not nature’s intention” for a child to be the boss. This can be caused by asking them too many questions about what they want to do and weak, inadequate parenting. Instead, a parent should have the last say and provide direction.

As children with a bullying instinct are typically defendant against caring and responsibility, something that can caused by too much separation from adults,Authorised authenticbreitlingwatches Stockists. Large Mens Breitling Watch range. shame and a feeling of being unsafe, MacNamara said a well-balanced child needed to have at least one adult in their lives that he or she knows is “absolutely crazy” about them.

She pointed out attachment is “our preeminent need and most powerful force in behavior and personality.” The primary purpose of attachment is facilitate dependence and caretaking from the top of the family down to its youngest members.

With adolescence now ending at age 21, in many cases, MacNamara said the challenge for parents is to keep their children ‘ s hearts and guard such attachments. Adversely, too much separation, shame and alarm for a child will only serve to push them away.Find nikeshoes from a vast selection of Heels.

She recommended five measures to keep children close. ” Collect” involved engaging a child’s attachment instinct, either through a look, a smile or a nod, making a connection and letting them know they matter.

“Bridging” is preserving that connection, such as in eating dinner together regularly, either at home or outside, or perhaps showing up at school unannounced as a surprise to pick them up and go out.

Arranging scenarios where a child has to be dependent on an adult is good for strengthening the attachment. A parent should put themselves in their child’s shoes and pick an activity that they can do together, such as playing sports, among others.

With rapid advances in technology in recent years, something children are largely much quicker to adapt to than adults, MacNamara said parents needed to put safeguards around such communication tools for younger family member for their own safety. Internet use, for one, needed to monitored.

Lastly, attachment hierarchies needed to be embedded in children,Buy Detroit Tigers shortwigs Shop The Official Online Shop of Major League Baseball. such as in peer mentoring.

“The thing that is meant to go around and buffer them is our relationship when we (adults) matter more (to children),” MacNamara said. The problem today, however, in a world where parents can be “neglectful or consumed with their own pursuits” they can often matter less in a child’s life, making them susceptible to bullying.

“When we matter less our children’s hearts are out there unprotected,” she said. “When you matter more you will protect your children more.”

Teacher to present program for Michelle Obama showcase

A local teacher is heading to Washington this week to give a presentation on how her school uses technology to get kids moving.

Wendy Starwalt, a physical education teacher at Carrie Busey Elementary in Savoy, will give a presentation Friday at Michelle Obama's second Let's Move in School Showcase.

She'll do it with the help of Olympic sprinters Carl Lewis and Tyson Gay and some area students.

The students, like Carrie Busey students, will wear special watches that track their activity. Then, Starwalt can download information about that activity and illustrate it using a special kind of software.

Each watch is called an Active, and it's made by a company called Polar. Starwalt bought 30 watches with grant money from Fuel Up to Play 60, a program sponsored by the National Dairy Council and NFL to encourage students to make healthy choices.

Starwalt rotates the watches to different classes — about 400 children attend Carrie Busey — and they wear them day and night for four days.

"It is a big deal," Starwalt said, when students get the chance to wear them.

Animated figures on the watches indicate what a student is doing, whether it's sitting, standing or moving. It has an indicator that fills up as students get closer to 60 minutes of activity a day.Amazing prices on hublotwatch from over 100 leading watch brands including. Some students are able to reach 60 minutes by the time they leave school, Starwalt said.

On the morning of the fourth day, Starwalt downloads information from the watches and uploads the students' minutes of activity to a virtual program called an Activarium.

Starwalt started using the watches last spring and was able to do so with the technology at the old school building in Kirby Avenue in Champaign.

Now, in the new school,Rubiks replicawatches See if you can solve this famous puzzle in this great implementation. she's able to project the Activarium on a large screen in the school's gym. When she uploads data from the watches,Top brands at low prices in dsquaredshoes, the students can see tropical fish bearing their names swim across the screen, showing how many minutes they were active while wearing the watch.

Their minutes turn into points, which are used to fill up a structure in the virtual aquarium — it could be a castle or spaceship. They can also use their points to virtually purchase items for the aquarium, like a bridge or treasure chest. Starwalt said classes vote on the items they'd like to buy or structures they make with their activity points.

Carrie Busey has other health and fitness programs. It's a Coordinated Approach To Child Health school, which means it offers nutritional education and aims to give students opportunities to move and learn why it's important to do so, Starwalt said.

The watches are just one more way to indicate to students how much they're moving. The school also gives students tokens for how many laps they walk outside on school grounds, and has exercise cards for them to use when they're inside for recess.

Starwalt said she'll give the presentation to people who belong to national associations, more than other teachers.

Carrie Busey Principal Jeff Scott said his school's use of things like the watches allow Carrie Busey to educate other organizations and schools.

"It's really neat for Carrie Busey to be out in front with this initiative," Scott said, both with the watches, as well as educating students about healthy lifestyles. "It's something we emphasize because we feel it's important for their long-lasting health."

And because of opportunities like the one Starwalt will have later this week, Carrie Busey sometimes has access to new programs that might help students more.Welcome to marcjacobsshoes Online Store.

Scott said it's also nice to show that programs like these are happening in Illinois and that it can be done well.

Her presentation will also show "how much it affects kids, and their health and wellness," Starwalt said.

Nebraska voters consider four ballot measures

Nebraskans will decide whether to enshrine hunting and fishing in the state constitution, let lawmakers serve longer and earn more money, and whether to make it a little easier to impeach officials.

With little campaigning being done on any of the measures on the Nov. 6 ballot,From Jessica pnikeairshoes to LAMB Pumps, it's unclear how any of them will fare. All were referred to voters by the Legislature.

Nebraska is one of four states — along with Idaho, Kentucky, and Wyoming — to consider creating a constitutional right to hunt and fish this November. The National Conference of State Legislatures says 13 states already have similar protections. Seven other states considered similar legislation this year but failed to pass anything.

Scott Smathers, executive director of the Nebraska Sportsmen's Foundation, said it's important to protect the sports now before animal rights groups,New Style Jeans niketn on sale with fast delivery! such as the Humane Society of the United States, can act. Smathers said he believes it's important to put this statement in the state constitution to make clear how Nebraskans feel about hunting and fishing.

"It's a statement that says, 'Listen, we value these traditions in our state,'" said Smathers, whose group has been holding meetings to explain the need for the ballot measure.

Critics of the proposal question whether language should be added to the constitution when there's no apparent threat to hunting and fishing in Nebraska. But hunting rights advocates point to measures animal-welfare groups pushed in other states, including a ban on dove hunting approved by Michigan voters in 2006 and a five-year ban on bear hunting in New Jersey that ended in 2010.

"We know that those groups are coming, and their efforts are increasing," Smathers said.

The Humane Society of the United States, which has led efforts to improve conditions for farm animals, isn't campaigning against the Nebraska measure, said Jocelyn Nickerson, the group's state director. Nickerson said there is no threat to hunting and fishing in Nebraska.

"This amendment is a solution in search of a problem," she said.

Randy Adkins,Large selection of authentic stainlesssteelwatches available. a political science professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, said he expects the hunting measure to pass easily because hunting is so popular in the state and some people are concerned about the possibility of new gun-ownership restrictions. The Design Museum presents iconic French shoe designer ladiesshoes,

Nebraska ballot measures must receive a simple majority of yes votes to pass. But the number of yes votes a measure receives must be greater than 35 percent of the total votes cast in the election.

Here's a rundown of the three other constitutional amendments:

— Nebraska's 49 state senators would see their salaries jump from the current $12,000 to $22,500 annually under one proposal. Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh proposed the raises, noting state senators haven't received a raise since 1988.

Lautenbaugh said the extra pay could enable more people to run for office, rather than only people with the personal wealth that enables them to serve for little pay.

Interviews and hallway chatter at each conference made clear

I recently attended two conferences devoted to the state of women's sports. The first was the espnW Summit in Tucson, Ariz.,Buy blogshells direct from the USA at low prices. attended by more than 200 athletes and executives from across the sports spectrum,My review of paneraireplica finds a company with a friendly staff, all with a shared interest in seeing women's sports continue to grow. The second, in Kansas City, Mo., was the annual convention of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), which attracted upward of 500 conference commissioners, athletic directors, coaches, senior women's administrators and NCAA staff who work daily with women's sports programs at all divisions of intercollegiate athletics.

Coming on the heels of this past summer's celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX, a recurring theme at both conferences was the question of where women's sports will, or should, go from here and, assuming that question can be answered, what it will take to get there.

As the presentations,Panerai replica watches, cheaprolexwatches, replica omega, panels, interviews and hallway chatter at each conference made clear,Chanel salereplicashoes For Sale. no one set of answers exists. That's because women's sports today aren't a monolith with a single, defining element that can easily be distilled into a common vision or action plan. Women's sports now are much more fragmented, and the needs, priorities and objectives within the "category" vary widely.

For those focused on encouraging more females to play sports or making sure the dictates of Title IX continue to be honored and enforced, one set of goals applies. For those trying to market athletic shoes, apparel, equipment and other products to the many girls and women who are now active sports participants, another set of strategies is required. For men's sports teams and leagues looking to attract female fans or expand their existing female fan bases, the critical path is different still. And for those on the front lines of elite women's sports outlets (be they collegiate, Olympic or pro) who are trying to get exposure, build audiences, generate revenue and eventually turn a profit, the appropriate course of action is another story altogether.

If all of that weren't enough, a separate battle plan seems to be needed to increase the number of women in key leadership positions in the sports industry (a goal that pretty much everyone in Tucson and Kansas City shared). Given all these moving parts, each involving different issues and requiring different responses, it's not surprising the way forward for women's sports isn't readily apparent. In fact, both conferences in many ways engendered more questions than answers.

As I sat through these two conferences and reflected on the gains that girls' and women's sports have made over the past 40 years, and the work that remains to be done, I tried to imagine what form progress will take going forward. To that end, I jotted down a few outcomes I'd like to see happen during the "next phase."

Some of the items on my wish list have to do with the creation and growth of new or existing women's sports properties. Others speak to the influence of women in the sports industry and their assumption of leadership positions in major sports organizations, particularly those that have a direct stake in women's sports programs.

The time required for these developments to occur would be anyone's guess; it could be five years, 10 years, 20 years or another 40 (and some might never come to pass at all, although the optimist in me hopes otherwise). Describing how each of the outcomes might be achieved, what people or groups would be needed to pull them off and how long it might take in order to see results in each case would likely require several more columns. In a few cases, the results might not even be quantifiable, although improvements would probably be easy to discern.

The special teams struggles KU faces go beyond kicking

Special teams has been a sore spot for Kansas University football coach Charlie Weis this season.

Forget about the missed field goals, short kickoffs and trouble finding a reliable kicker. It’s obvious what those plights have done to this team, as Weis often has gone for it on fourth down when other teams would simply have tacked on three points.

The special teams struggles KU faces go beyond kicking, though. KU also has struggled with its return game and in coverage, and shortcomings in both areas reared their ugly heads againg during last week’s loss to Oklahoma in which the Sooners returned both a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns. That effort, or lack thereof, proved to be the breaking point for Weis and special teams coordinator Clint Bowen.

“I told Clint, after throwing up this past weekend,A tagheuerreplicafederal appeals court on Thursday upheld the conviction of Karen Sypher, that all hands are on deck, put whoever you want out there,” Weis said earlier this week. “So he knows he’s got free rein to put whoever out there. He doesn’t have to ask for my permission. Whoever he wants out there and he thinks give ’em the best chance because I saw enough of that.”

Throughout the season, Weis employed a rule that offensive or defensive starters could serve on just two special teams units. When asked if that rule was still in place, Weis hammered home his desire to see improvement on special teams.

“All hands on deck,” he said again, emphasizing each word.

According to several KU players, Weis and his coaching staff have not simply electd to change up the personnel this week in preparation for Saturday’s 11 a.Rubiks replicawatches See if you can solve this famous puzzle in this great implementation.m. kickoff against Texas at Memorial Stadium. They’ve also put in extra time during practice.

“We worked on punt (team) a lot today,” sophomore Ben Heeney said Tuesday night. “More than we had in the past. Obviously, it’s a problem if they’re scoring touchdowns and getting big returns. And I think you’re gonna see more starters out there on special teams this week. It’s a huge part of the game, and games can be won and lost on special teams.”

Special teams was an area in which Heeney stood out in 2011. He played on every special teams unit and often was praised for his relentless effort and ability to make plays. Because of that, the first-year starter from Hutchinson has taken it upon himself to stress to teammates the importance of the game’s third facet.

“I’ve (talked) with a couple guys,” Heeney said. “But I feel like I should probably mention it more, just to tell them that this is where you can make a name for yourself. Each bvlgariwatches comes with its original serial.”

Sophomore tight end Jimmay Mundine was on two units last week — field goal and kickoff return — and he said he noticed several upperclassmen and starters adding special teams duties to their list of priorities this week.

“There were some older guys who, since things weren’t going well, said, ‘Put me out there, I’ll do more, I’ll give more,’” Mundine recalled.Top brands at low prices in dsquaredshoes, “Hopefully that’ll just motivate everyone to do their jobs.”

Mundine likened the role of a special teams player to that of an offensive lineman.

“They do so much,” Mundine said. “But they don’t get much credit. Coach Weis tells us all the time that there are guys in the NFL whose only job is to play special teams. That’s all they do, and they make a lot of money doing it.”

Sophomore running back Brandon Bourbon was another guy who served on two special teams units last week. With nagging injuries slowing his progress in the backfield and James Sims, Tony Pierson and Taylor Cox playing so well in front of him, Bourbon said he looked at special teams as his ticket to more playing time.

“Special teams is just effort and heart and a few fundamental things that the coaches will teach you,” Bourbon said. “But it’s mainly effort. I want to get a bigger role. I would do ’em all if they asked me to.”

Weis agreed with Bourbon in saying special teams often came down to guys making plays. But he held his coaching staff accountable for at least part of KU’s poor performance thus far.

“Let’s not just blame it on the players,” Weis said. “Because the easiest thing to do is just take the players and throw them under the bus and say, ‘Yeah, it’s all their fault; we put them right in the right spot and they just didn’t make a play.’ Now to be honest with you, there are times that you just have to go make the play. And there are things schematically that you can try to do to put people in a better position to make a play, so it’s a combination of the two.”

The storied shoes went neglected along with a trove of dresses

The shoes were the stuff of legend: pairs upon colorful pairs of pumps, flats and other footwear that evinced the lavish lifestyle of Imelda Marcos, the woman wed to deposed Philippines strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

Thousands of showy shoes were found at the Manila presidential palace and another Marcos home decades ago, left behind in 1986 when the couple fled the country in the throes of a popular revolt.

The new government held up the high heels as the epitome of the ejected Marcoses’ extravagance as their nation was mired in barefoot poverty, an anti-Cinderella story warning of the dangers of autocracy. The leader who succeeded Marcos, Corazon Aquino, displayed the manifold footwear in the presidential palace. Hundreds of pairs were lent to a local shoe museum.

But in the decades since, the shoes that turned heads worldwide for all the wrong reasons have been boxed up. Some were damaged by termites, others deluged by monsoon waters or encrusted with mold,Order high quality breitlingwatches at home. The storied shoes went neglected along with a trove of dresses and accessories stored at the Malacanang Palace that was moved to museum offices two years ago, the museum said in a statement Monday. No plan was created for what to do with them, it explained.

Some of Marcos gowns could help create a fashion collection for the museum, “but this has yet to be even formally proposed given the as-yet politically sensitive nature of their provenance,” the museum said.
Though the Filipino government told reporters there was no historical significance to the boxed shoes and clothing, save for some clothing made by Filipino designers,Amazing prices on hublotwatch from over 100 leading watch brands including. it nonetheless promised to ensure they would be restored, local media reported. Filipinos lamented the damage on social media, saying that love Marcos or loathe her, the shoes were a reminder of the country's past that had been carelessly laid to waste.

Spoiling the shoes may have been not only an archival loss, but a financial one. “When they broke into the palace, they went into my closet looking for stolen loot,” Marcos said of her cumbersome collection, The Times reported six years ago. “And all they found were shoes, beautiful shoes.”

I was bubbling in that convenient guilt

Less than an hour ago, I was in the middle of the Poughkeepsie Galleria Finish Line, determined to pay the rumored $340.20 for the new LeBron "Kang" James "LeBron X" sneakers. My decision to pay $50.20 more for a pair of sneakers than the minimum wage employee in Mississippi makes in a week wasn't at all impulsive. The full-time Kang-haters on network TV, the hating members of my family and hate-ish friends on Facebook, made my decision to buy the Kangs less of a trek in excess and more of a quest fueled by the hate that hate(rs) produced.

"These the LeBron X's?" I asked the tiny saleswoman helping me at Finish Line, and held up a $150.00 blood-red size 13 with a black swoosh and a glowing green bottom.

I learned that the X's hadn't come out yet, that I was holding a special Liverpool edition IX. "The X's won't be nearly as expensive as people think," the saleswoman told me. "The most expensive pair will probably be around $290."

She looked down at my ashy ankles and my dusty green suede Pumas. "You're buying these IXs for someone else, huh?"

"Yep," I lied and paid $169.75 for the shoes and two pairs of green and black shoelaces. "My little cousin loves him some Bron-Bron.But to make your coachshoes shopping experience with us more amazing,Find guccishoes and dsquared shoes men from a vast selection of Clothing," I fake laughed and walked out of Finish Line having paid $170.45 less than I hoped to.

By the time I made it to the parking lot of the Galleria, I was bubbling in that convenient guilt. I had made a poor decision. I figured that paying $162.75 for sneakers that probably cost less than $15.67 to make in China should be shameful. I also wondered what special closet in hell awaited those of us who made it possible for Nike to make more of its popular "Lazy But Talented" T-shirts. As I drove into the parking lot of my building, I actually pondered organizing a boycott of overpriced Nikes on Facebook called "Living Beyond the Swoosh."

But see,We Specialize In Selling royaloak, I'm home now and the Kangs are so much more beautiful under the soft light of my apartment than they were at Finish Line. Plus the soles literally smell like bleeding birch trees. When I put the shoes on my cracked feet,A Professional louboutinshoe Shopping Center providing. not only do I feel like a certified member of the Kangdom; I feel, even just for a second, like I'm capable of occupying that space beyond greatness, too.

Instead of organizing a boycott of Nike, I decide to take a picture or video of myself rocking the red Nike Liverpool IXs, baggy black shorts and a black hoodie. I'm determined to place the photo or video on Facebook with a caption that reads, "I'ma let all y'all bitter Kang-haters finish, but the LeBron 'Kang' James shoe, like LeBron 'Kang' James, might be the greatest of all time. All time!"

I'm rehearsing what I'm going to write to the haters on Facebook. I convince myself that it doesn't make any sense to pinpoint the ways that LeBron James or his Nikes might be complicit in urban decay when the net worth of black families in the U.S. is only some $5,000. If we really wanted to find ways to stop young brothers from hitting other young brothers upside the head for Jordans and LeBrons, we would find a way increase black familial net worth to far more than 15 pairs of LeBron X's. Plus, when the best players in the world design and brand $100, $200 and $300 shoes, why wouldn't a kid who comes from a similarly maligned place, who listens to similarly maligned music and speaks a similarly maligned language, want to literally walk in those similarly maligned shoes?

"Don't hate the player," I say for the first time in my life, looking down at my blood-red LeBron "Kang" James sneakers. "Hate the game."

I get umbrella repair work then

“It won’t stick, Raja,” Theresanathan patiently tells a customer who wants his slipper repaired immediately. “It needs to be stitched, it will take time.” When the customer walks away, Theresanathan tells me that footwear technology has changed in the last 27 years; the new moulded shoes and slippers need to be glued as well as stitched. “Look at this shoe,” he shows me branded sneakers with the sole hanging open. “When I’m done with it, it’ll look perfect. The stitches will be invisible.”

Theresanathan set up his shop 25 years ago in Besant Nagar, having trained to be a cobbler at Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai. “CLRI gave me all the tools; I bought this shop from a relative who was very unwell. This area was so quiet then,” he says of the broad 7th Avenue. But the early days were very hard, and he barely earned Rs. 7 or 8 daily. “I was paid 50 paise or Re. 1 for mending slippers. Sometimes, I got Rs. 2 for polishing shoes. It was very difficult to support a family,” says the 53-year-old. Christian Louboutin signs his stylish shoes

What will people do for a signed shoe by Christian Louboutin, the high-end Parisian designer whose footwear customers include Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, the Olsen twins and Danielle Steel? In New Orleans, Jessica Alvendia headed the line at Saks 5th Avenue -- and she arrived at 9 a.m. Friday for a 3 p.m.What we see and hear enough of, we buy christianlouboutinshoe into – often. appearance by the designer.

A few steps behind her a husband from Charleston, S.C., explained that he had driven 12 hours straight, purchased an $835 pair of shoes, and had hoped to surprise his wife. (He answered his cell phone and spoiled the surprise).

The staff at Saks was pretty excited, too: Louboutin only does about 20 signings a year in the United States.

It was the first-ever New Orleans appearance for the designer, who has come to command the top of the women’s market with shoes that always have a glossy red sole. For Louboutin’s signing, the store hired a New Orleans Police Department detail cop, engaged a jazz combo, and directed hovering journalists to a lounge that offered a nice view of the backstage scurrying that occurs when a big name is in the house.

Away from the hubbub, Louboutin was the picture of calm. A genial fellow with a trim, gray goatee, he was sequestered in a side room with two assistants, a selection of markers, and about 50 pairs of shoes that waiting customers had pre-purchased. He wore jeans and a golf shirt. He set his glasses high on his forehead, smiled easily, and generally looked like someone’s French uncle on vacation, except for the three-toned patent and suede lace-up shoes with the orange piping: an item from his men’s collection.

“When I look at the shoes these customers have selected,Find brand-name hublotreplicaat your fingertips with fast, I can tell that New Orleans is different compared to other cities. Most of my American customers purchase plainer, more classic designs. Here they have selected shoes with vivid colors and lots of embellishments,” he said. “I also notice this: there seems to be a special interest in my highest heels: no flats for New Orleans.”

“I think a lot about silhouettes and how to make an object that will look good in movement, but I have a tendency to celebrate detail and ornament. It’s comes through in everything I do, whether collecting furniture or looking at art when I travel.”

“I didn’t grow up imagining that I would be a shoe designer, but in Paris one is exposed to the idea of luxury, to the artisan tradition. It is something that came naturally to me,” Louboutin said.

Selling shoes also comes naturally to the designer: “I started out with one shop in Paris and I did the selling with one other person. I don’t have time for that now, but I need to keep my link with customers, with the stories they tell me, with the dreams and the special requests. It’s a direct personal link that informs my designs --- and it continues with these personal appearances.”

When it comes time to design, however, Louboutin prefers to be alone.

“For two weeks, I unplug the phone and draw. I work with a single assistant,” he said. “At my factory, outside Milan, I still work hands-on. I trim and correct. I love the smell of leather.”

His home base is an apartment over the factory.

“In the early days, I was forced to leave the factory at closing time and go to some boring hotel and watch videos,” he said. “Now, I have the run of my own factory after hours. If I get an idea, I can test it out by myself. Even when I’m asleep, I keep working. The shoes are under my pillow. The ideas float up. I dream about shoes and I try to make them come true.”

What could have been a historic day for the Boilermakers

After two landslide defeats, losing a close one didn’t feel any better to Purdue.

Caleb TerBush and the Boilermakers had No. 7 Ohio State right where they wanted. The Buckeyes were down by eight points with 47 seconds left and a long way to go to the end zone.We provide top quality cheapwatchesand IWC Replica Watches. They were also missing their star quarterback.

But backup Kenny Guiton threw a TD pass with 3 seconds left and followed it with another completion for the tying two-point conversion to force overtime. From there, the Buckeyes scored on a run by Carlos Hyde, and the Boilermakers misfired on four passes. That was enough for Ohio State to seal a 29-22 victory.

“The past couple of weeks we got blown out at home,” TerBush said, referring to 44-13 and 38-14 losses to Michigan and Wisconsin, respectively. “Then we fight down to the wire at Ohio State. It would have been a huge win for us.Read Mens fashionwatch eBay Review and Guides in the eBay categories. It’s disappointing, but as we learned from the past couple of weeks, we have to move on.”

What could have been a historic day for the Boilermakers (3-4, 0-3 Big Ten) ended up as their third consecutive loss. There were plenty of high points — Akeem Hunt sped 100 yards with a kickoff in the first quarter, and the Boilermakers were in command for most of the game. But the bottom line was another setback.

No one should have been more down than head coach Danny Hope, but he tried to avoid making matters worse than they were.

Asked if this was the most devastating loss in his four seasons with the Boilermakers, he smiled and said, “I didn’t say that, you did. No.”

But he wasn’t happy with how his team handled the last few minutes. He certainly wasn’t happy with the officiating, either. He felt Ohio State got away with a lot of holding calls.

“I know this: There’s a couple things in my next life I do not want to come back as,” Hope said. “One of them is an official and the other one is probably a defensive coach.”

For almost 60 minutes, he couldn’t have had any complaints with his own defense or its coaches.

But with 2:40 left, strong safety Landon Feichter intercepted a tipped pass by Guiton. All Purdue had to do was run out the clock.Shop our large selection of authentic buywatches at fantastic.

Before the Boilermakers even got their hands on the ball, however, a lineman jumped offside. TerBush completed a sideline pass to Gabe Holmes for a yard, Brandon Cottom rushed for a yard up the middle, and Akeem Shavers — who had raced 83 yards for a touchdown with a TerBush pass on the game’s first offensive snap — gained seven yards around left end. Because of the penalty, the Boilers had to punt.

“That was huge,” said TerBush, who completed 19 of 30 passes for 230 yards and two scores with one interception. “All we needed was one first down and we would have been able to run the clock out. That false start (penalty) killed us.”

Cody Webster’s 48-yard punt and Chris Fields’ nine-yard return gave Ohio State one last gasp from its own 39. The Buckeyes made the most of it, driving the length of the field, scoring, and then forcing overtime.

In overtime, Ohio State quickly scored as Guiton, who took over when standout Braxton Miller was injured and left late in the third quarter, handled the pressure with the poise of a starter.

“We’ll get a better look once we watch film,” Purdue defensive end Ryan Russell said. “Just from our perspective, the defensive line needed to disrupt the quarterback a little more.”

Kateri was neither a martyr nor a member of a religious order

Tens of thousands of pilgrims, including Native Americans in tribal regalia, Hawaiians with leis and Bavarians in lederhosen, packed St. Peter's Square on Sunday, Oct. 21, as Pope Benedict XVI canonized seven saints, one a Mohawk who has long been an icon for Indians throughout the United States and Canada.

Among those in attendance was Jake Finkbonner, the Sandy Point boy whose recovery from a flesh-eating bacterial infection was the miracle that led to the first Native American saint. Jake, now 12, received communion from the pope along with members of his family.

"It was spectacular being able to walk behind my family as they were going to take communion," his father, Donny, told McClatchy.

"I can't think of enough words," to describe the day,Wonder Wink Scrub heelshoes with an innovative four way and two way stretch fabrics for the nursing and medical professional. We provide top quality cheapwatchesand IWC Replica Watches. said his wife, Elsa. "It's surreal. It keeps on getting better."

The elevation of Kateri Tekakwitha to sainthood was a breakthrough not only for Native Americans, but also for the Roman Catholic Church. The pope went out of his way to emphasize the church's respect for Indian culture and tribal traditions, which wasn't always the case.

Born in 1656 in what is today upstate New York, St. Kateri died in what is now Canada just 24 years later, having spent the last four years of her life as a Christian. Benedict praised her for staying "faithful to the traditions of her people," except for their religious beliefs. "Her greatest wish was to know and to do what pleased God She lived a life radiant with faith and purity," he said.

Unlike most of the others canonized Sunday, Kateri was neither a martyr nor a member of a religious order, but Benedict gave her a bigger challenge than anyone else. "Protectress of Canada and the first native American saint, we entrust to you the renewal of the faith in the First Nations and in all of North America," he said in his homily.

A second American canonized Sunday, Mother Marianne Cope, born in Germany in 1838,Free shipping BOTH ways on captoesandals, was a Franciscan nun who tended a leper's colony in Hawaii in the 19th century. Pedro Calungsod was a martyr at age 18 in 17th century Philippines. Jacques Berthieu, a French priest born in the mid-19th century, spent much of his life in Madagascar, and Giovanni Battista Piamarta, born in 1841, served as a parish priest in Brescia, Italy. Maria Carmelo Salles y Barangueras, born in 1848, founded a Spanish religious order, and Anna Schaefer, born in Germany in 1882, intended to join a religious order but was prevented by ill health.

The journey for Kateri, some of whose bone fragments were presented to the pope as part of the ceremony, was a long one. She was first proposed for sainthood more than a century ago. Even after so long a wait, her elevation could mark the beginning of a new relationship between Native Americans, in the United States and Canada, and the Roman Catholic Church.

"We've been waiting so long for this, for 32 years (since her beatification, the second step in the process to sainthood), and we didn't know it would happen," said Clementine Little Hawk Hernandez, a Lakota Sioux, 71, from San Pedro, Calif.

"I never thought in my lifetime I would see her as a saint," said Cindy Ginnish, 51, a member of the Canadian MicMac tribe, which resides in Newfoundland and New Brunswick. "I work with addicts," she said, "We often say, 'Pray to Kateri.' In my own personal experience, she has always helped so many people."

For the family of Jake Finkbonner, Sunday was an uplifting day of the sort that couldn't have been imagined as he lay near death six years ago from the bacterial infection. The church ruled his recovery, following prayers and the placing of a relic of Kateri on his body, to be a miracle, and that opened the way for Kateri's canonization.

Jake and his family, who attend Assumption Catholic Church in Bellingham,Kleinfeld Bridal carries the largest selection of couture vuittonhandbags, were the toast of a reception thrown by the Canadians. Archbishop Gerald Cyprien Lacroix, the archbishop of Quebec City and primate of Canada, was just one of the top Canadian clerics who had his photograph taken with Jake. When Ambassador Anne Leahy introduced the family, the roomful of top church officials and government dignitaries broke into applause.

Phil Fontaine, representing the feelings of many of the First Nations, as Canada calls its Native Americans, said Sunday that the canonization should be a milestone in relations with the Roman Catholic Church.

In 2009, Benedict granted Fontaine and other First Nation leaders an audience in which he apologized for the abuse and mistreatment of Indian children in so-called residential schools that the church operated on behalf of the Canadian government. This led to the start of a broader reconciliation.

"Throughout history, the Roman Catholic Church has been reluctant to apologize," he said. "We came here hoping they would issue a signed statement, acknowledging the church's role in the (abuses in the) residential schools. We were pleased, reassured and comforted by the statement."

"There has been a rupture for too long" between Indians and the Church, he told a reception held by the Canadian Embassy at the Pontifical North American College, the leading seminary for U.S. priests in Rome. He said Canada's First Nations see Kateri's canonization "as a moment, as an opportunity for us. We accept your apology. We forgive. Now let us take this moment for healing and reconciliation. It is such an important moment."
