Middle East's Fragile Democracy in Danger

If the year 2011 appeared to be a beacon of hope for freedom and democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, indications are that 2012 will be marked by rough battles to protect the fruits of valiant revolts across Europe's Mediterranean frontiers.

In fact, the conflict brewing over the Strait of Hormuz bodes ill for peace – the spinal cord of freedom and democracy – in the region and beyond, unless it is prevented from turning violent and gory.

The curtain on the impending battles was raised on December 29 when the Egyptian security forces raided the offices of civil society and human rights organizations in Cairo. The aim, according to the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), was "to intimidate activists and rights advocates, gag their mouths, and freeze their activities in support of human rights and against repression and torture.Aluminum pumashoes is from China factory."

ANHRI said: "Some police officers in military uniforms bearing the emblem of Commandos and men who claimed to be public prosecution personnel stormed the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP). All people present were held inside the center and prevented from exiting. Moreover, the files, documents, and computers were seized. There are even scattered news and talk about raiding 18 other organizations. . . (including) rights centers and international organizations."

Explaining the perturbing dimensions of the attack which it said was part of a "systematic campaign" against civil society organizations, ANHRI averred: "(President Hosni) Mubarak’s regime did not dare to undertake such practices prior to the uprising."

The U.S.-based International Freedom of Expression eXchange network (IFEX) said the offices raided by security offices included those of Freedom House, the International Republican Institute (IRI), the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and at least two Egyptian organizations, the ACIJLP and the Budgetary and Human Rights Observatory (BAHRO). German media reported that the office of Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), named after the first West German chancellor, was also raided.

"Staff members present at the Freedom House offices during the raids were held incommunicado; cell phones, laptops, funds and documents found during the raids were confiscated; and the office was closed. The raid on Freedom House comes just three days after it formally submitted papers to register its offices in accordance with Egyptian law," IFEX informed.

Freedom House president David J. Kramer agreed with ANHRI that the raids "represent an escalation of repression unheard of even during the Mubarak regime." These come, he alleged, "in the context of an intensive campaign by the Egyptian Government to dismantle civil society through a politically-motivated legal campaign aimed at preventing 'illegal foreign funding' of civil society operations in Egypt."

Freedom House was founded in 1941 and had as its first chairperson Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States in times of worldwide economic crisis and world war.

The profound significance of the raid in the view of Freedom House's current president is that it is "the clearest indication" yet that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), the military chiefs now ruling Egypt, swissetareplicawatches and discount designer shoes provided for you. "has no intention of permitting the establishment of genuine democracy and is attempting to scapegoat civil society for its own abysmal failure to manage Egypt's transition effectively."

Freedom House calls on the Egyptian government to return confiscated property; permit the re-opening of all offices of non-governmental organizations closed in the recent raids; and allow the free and unfettered operation of local and international NGOs in Egypt as they work to expand respect for human rights and help the Egyptian people in their efforts to form a more just, open and democratic political system.

It also urges the Obama Administration to scrutinize the $1.3 billion that the United States annually provides the Egyptian military to fund arms purchases and training.

"In the current fiscal environment, the United States must not subsidize authoritarianism in Egypt while the Egyptian government is preventing NGOs from implementing democracy and human rights projects subsidized by the US taxpayer," said Charles Dunne, director of Middle East and North Africa programs.

Journalists jailed

In advance of the Cairo raids,Childs' collection of about 600 pairs of discountskirts is on display at the Yakima Valley Museum for the rest of this year. ANHRI drew attention to the "arbitrary and degrading expulsion" of journalist Radwan Hifani from his office at the 'Assabah' newspaper on December 21, due to his public and continuing solidarity with Rachid Nini, the imprisoned editor-in-chief of 'el-Masaa' newspaper.

Despite being one of the founding members of the newspaper and having spent over 11 years working for it, ANHRI said, Hifani was denied access to his office after he returned from his annual leave. He was denied access on the grounds that he had been absent without prior permission.

"The real reason, however, relates to the strained relations between Hifani and Khaled al-Herry, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, due to Hifani's solidarity with Nini, who has served six months of his one year sentence in the Okasha Central Prison in Casablanca," ANHRI said.

In addition to being the editor-in-chief of 'el-Masaa', 41-year old Nini is also the writer of a well-known column entitled "Look and Reflect". In June, the Court of First Instance in Casablanca convicted and upheld a one-year prison sentence and 1000 Dirham fine (approx. US$115) against him, for "contempt of a judicial entity" and "reporting false criminal circumstances". There have been calls for the release of Nini, especially after the drafting of the new constitution that was approved in July.

"Such arbitrary practices by the 'Assabah' newspaper's administrative board are unacceptable and antithetical to professional standards. They should have allowed room for negotiations and discussion if they truly found the matter to be purely administrative in nature and nothing to do with freedom of expression or Hifani's solidarity with Nini," said ANHRI.

Detailed descriptions of harassment highlight the manner in which normal life is made impossible for journalists who hardly have a room for manoeuvre.

The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that as of December 1, 2011 the number of journalists imprisoned worldwide shot up more than 20 percent to its highest level since the mid-1990s, an increase driven largely by widespread jailings across the Middle East and North Africa.

CPJ and IFEX condemned on December 28 the attacks on at least eight journalists on December 24-25 by armed forces loyal to outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh. "The clashes between pro-Saleh forces and protesters left nine people dead," a news agency reported.Aluminum pumashoes is from China factory.

"These attacks indicate how tenuous the situation remains for journalists to work in Yemen," said Mohamed Abdel Dayem, CPJ's Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. "Despite the political solutions being offered to address the crisis, journalists are still being attacked. We call on Yemeni authorities to allow journalists to carry out their work unharmed and without threat."

News reports stated that Ahmed al-Musebli, a presenter for the pro-opposition broadcaster Suhail TV, was beaten and arrested by security forces on December 24 at a protest in the neighborhood of Dar Slim in Sana'a, the capital. He was detained in an unknown location, but released the next day.

Ahmed al-Jabr, a journalist with the official Saba news agency, was attacked by pro-Saleh forces while covering the protests in Dar Slim on December 24, according to news reports. The journalist was injured under one eye, and his car windows were smashed, news reports said.Buy edhardyshoes boot products on TradeTang and high quality air max boot directly from trustworthy Chinese air max boot wholesalers & suppliers. Another freelance journalist, Walid Ablan, was also assaulted by pro-Saleh armed factions at the same protest, reports said.

On December 24, Suhail TV cameraman Kamal al-Mahfady was reporting on protests in Taiz, the country's third largest city, when he was attacked by a group of pro-Saleh armed forces, according to news reports. He sustained a head injury, news reports said. Another journalist, BBC reporter Abdallah Ghoraib, was also attacked by pro-Saleh forces.

Three journalists - Samia al-Aghraby, a reporter for the opposition weekly Al-Thawry, Marwan Ismail, with the news website Yemenat, and freelancer Arwa Abdo Othman – were attacked by Republican Guards at a protest in Sana'a on December 24. In a statement, the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate said the soldiers pulled at al-Aghraby's clothes, threatened to beat Othman, and confiscated three cameras.

CPJ has documented the ongoing stream of protest-related attacks against journalists in Yemen, including deaths, physical assaults, detentions, harassments, and attacks on news outlets. Suhail TV in particular has been targeted before, and the BBC's Abdallah Ghoraib was beaten while covering a protest in September.

"Yemeni troops appear to have unlawfully killed as many as 35 civilians in the city of Taizz since a United Nations Security Council resolution demanded on October 21, 2011 that Yemen stop attacks on civilians, Human Rights Watch said on November 25. Most of these civilians were killed in artillery shelling by the Yemeni army that indiscriminately struck homes, a hospital, and a public square filled with protesters, witnesses told Human Rights Watch.

Leslie Hindman on Buying Art and Antiques

What's hot among auction buyers?
Midcentury modern furniture is one thing that's hot right now, which can mean that it's overpriced. If people like English and French furniture, they should buy it now because it's relatively cheap. But really, people shouldn't buy something just because it's hot. You need to discover what you really like—paintings, furniture, jewelry, whatever. Invest some time learning about these things and then buy what pleases you. The first rule of collecting: Only buy things you like, because you can never be guaranteed they will be a good investment.

So what's fashionable shouldn't trump what's tasteful?
Some people think they don't even know what they like. One way to determine what you like is simply to go to a museum and walk around. Or get an art history book. And pretty soon you'll realize that you do know what you like. You like abstract expressionists? Buy the best John Little painting you can afford instead of a poor-quality Willem de Kooning.

Why?
An artist's best work tends to appreciate. We always recommend buying the best of a lesser-priced artist rather than the worst of a higher-priced artist. Among Chicago imagists, buy a great Jim Nutt, not a bad Ed Paschke; British sculpture—buy a great Lynn Chadwick, not a bad Henry Moore; watches—buy a stainless steel Patek Philippe, not an 18-karat-gold Movado; crystal—buy a top-of-the-line Steuben rather than a lower-end Tiffany. You get the idea.

How does a know-nothing like me follow art prices?
It's easier to follow the art market now, including what sold for how much, than it was in 1982, when I first opened an auction house, thanks to sites like Artnet.com, Artfact.com, AskART.com, Artprice.com, and Artinfo.com.

Auctions seem so dramatic. Do regular people belong at one?
We have 30 to 40 auctions a year, and some people are intimidated because of what they've seen on television or in the press—all those very, very high-end auctions in New York or London. People call and ask me, “What should I wear?” Wear whatever you're wearing, I say. You can buy something for $5,000 or even $500 at auction. At a jewelry auction we had in September, we sold a 7.52-carat diamond ring, beautifully set in platinum, loveedhardies and footwear available from Choice online at unbeatable prices with free next day delivery. for $268,000, but we also sold a group of coral necklaces for $223.A food and juicycouturesuits bank has been set up for residents affected by Saturdays storms in Snow Hill.20.Large selection of hellodress.

What do you buy?
Oh God, please don't ask me what I collect. I don't buy anything. I can't afford what I really would like to own, like a Mark Rothko or Franz Kline painting. I have a drawing that looks like a Franz Kline—it's from the fifties, and it cost $5,000. Mostly I have a lot of taxidermy.where you can buy high fashion buy cheap jeans online in very low price, buy goosejacket from Jean-mall now! Natick company makes jewelry to fight cancer

Cancer is not a disease.coogijeans provides the ultimate in impact protection reducing shock and distributing pressure to provide you with absolute comfort and stability. It’s a terrorist.

Cancer hides in the shadows, strikes without warning, fails to discriminate and changes lives forever.
A feeling of helplessness can set in.

Yet, helplessness doesn’t mean hopelessness. All it takes is a second for our imagination to spark one idea that can make the world a better place.
Natick’s Caroline Goldman has that spark. She’s the founder of home-based dream big . . . cure cancer, a manufacturer of jewelry, clothing and accessories she started in the spring of 2010.

Her company’s mission is to wipe cancer from the planet. Therefore,Custom fashionairmax from photos by our painting. she pledges 25 percent of her gross revenues to Needham’s Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC).

The outfit’s product line includes dresses for young girls ranging in price from $30 to $60 and designer snack bags priced at $12.
Yet, her feature product is a hand-made wristlet called the have hope cancer awareness bracelet. It’s is a savvy piece of jewelry priced at $35 that mixes casual fashion with human compassion.

“The bracelet is made with a sterling silver clasp with colorful beads made from glass and stone,” says Goldman. “Each bead represents a different kind of cancer from colon and ovarian to lymphoma to lung.”

What separates Goldman’s bracelets from other commemorative pieces is they’re unique.
While each bracelet has the same kind of stones, the stone shapes and shades of color vary from bracelet to bracelet. This personalizes the item for the buyer.
Moreover,We present you a vast choice of cheap oldtshirts. while other campaign emblems are seasonal, Goldman’s product isn’t.

“This is an item that can be worn year-round and can compliment a host of a woman’s favorite casual and semi-casual styles,” says Goldman. “The product not only shows the array of cancers out there, but also helps to them remember friends and family who’ve suffered at the hands of different forms, or even multiple forms, of cancer.”

Goldman, 41,When your team gets ready for battle with the opposition, be ready with this tshirtsale. found the name, dream big. . .cure cancer while on her treadmill.

Night after night, Goldman hunted for a catchy name for her business. She spent countless hours perusing social media sites and reading personal development and inspirational books. The words “dream big” showed up time and time again.
Then, one day while Goldman was breaking a sweat on her treadmill, she finally stopped sweating the name.

“I was training for the Pan- Mass Challenge at the time and I needed inspiration,” says Goldman. “I had been reading about personal development and the name just happened to come to me. As soon as it did, I hopped off the treadmill, wrote it on an envelope and pinned it to the wall. I did get back on the treadmill right after that.China lacostestore catalog.”

Goldman’s first experience with cancer was in 1995 when her grandmother, Jeanne Cassie, was diagnosed with breast
cancer

For Goldman, it was a frightening experience since she didn’t know much about the disease. She and her grandmother had an unusually close relationship.
In 1972, when Goldman was 2-years-old, her parents divorced. Consequently, Goldman and her mom moved into her grandmother’s South Natick home where she lived until her teen years.

“Since I lived with her (from the time) I was 2, it was one of the saddest experiences of my life,” says Goldman.
“Gramma was in the hospital and, at times, she could talk to you and at others, not, because of the multitude of pain medications. (Many times) she wasn’t even aware I was right there. She passed away in 2000, three months after I was married. I firmly believe she held on so that she could be at my wedding.”

Cassie’s loss to cancer was a tragedy, not just for Goldman, but her entire family.

But it was her Uncle Billy Cassie who inspired the bracelet. Uncle Billy has had lymphoma since 2009 and is still fighting.
Thus, Goldman, her mom and her aunts decided to create a bracelet for a fundraiser, which took the form of a team-based overnight walk in 2010.
Their initial product had a wire band with other gemstones representing a variety of cancers.

Goldman loved the idea. By the same token, she thought there was another way to make it, and the have hope bracelet was born.
“I loved the initial bracelet. It was the inspiration for my current product,” says Goldman. “Also, I thought it was a great tool to raise money for the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge.”

PMC is a volunteer-driven charity that raises money to fight cancer. The world-renowned organization raises funds for cancer awareness by holding an annual bike-a-thon during which thousands of cyclists ride through 46 towns across Massachusetts.

The Roger Vivier Sample Sale Gets Rave Reviews

Yesterday, French footwear label Roger Vivier kicked off its first New York sample sale at Soiffer Haskin. The company is famous for avoiding discounts, but they found a way to keep things classy even in the less-than-luxe context of a sale, announcing that they would donate a portion of the proceeds to charity New Yorkers for Children.

Mizhattan, Madison Avenue Spy, and the JetShopper all checked out the sale when it opened, and all agree that the merchandise is pretty spectacular.you will find perfect replicashoes to complement your favorite outfit for a night out on the town in our collection. For boots, prepare to spend between $420 and $600. Bags fall into roughly the same range, although the big ones go up to $800. “That's funny,” Selanne said, hearing Doan got the Bronx cheer during the Coyotes' recent visit. “Hopefully they're not going to boo for me.”

If there's one Jets opponent who might be spared the wrath of the Winnipeg faithful, you'd think it'd be Selanne.

I don't know if he's the most popular Jet of them all — Hedberg, Nilsson and Hull come to mind — but the Finish Flash is close, even though he only played parts of four seasons here, beginning as an electrifying rookie in 1992-93.

And with his imminent return to Winnipeg for his first game in nearly 16 years, the Finnish Flash has been one of the most popular players in the NHL this week, with enough media requests to make a guy's head spin.

Anaheim Ducks media man Alex Gilchrist was so inundated — CBC and TSN sent reporters to Anaheim for sit-down interviews, while several writers “and every radio station in Canada” requested him by phone — he set up a conference call for Selanne, Tuesday.

For his part, Selanne says he circled Dec. 17 on his calendar as soon as the schedule came out.

“Obviously I knew it's going to be very special to have a chance to come back there and play,” he said.Shop for high quality winterjacket Watches. “But I don't really know what to expect. Selanne won over the hearts of the hockey masses here as quickly as he flew down the ice, his record-setting, 76-goal campaign and enthusiasm complimenting his Finnish humility — and a star was born.

“It's funny, when I go to visit teams' buildings there's a lot of Winnipeg Jets 13 jerseys there, still,” he said. “That makes me feel really good.”

Wildly popular with teammates, coaches, even the media, I don't know a hockey writer who has a bad thing to say about the guy. Or a fan, for that matter.

“Pretty much every place where I've played I've always had special relationship with the fans. And Obviously Winnipeg was really, really special,” Selanne said. “There's a reason why their plates on their cars have Friendly Manitoba — because it's a really friendly city and unbelievable fans. It was just a great four and a half years there.Shop for high quality winterjacket Watches.”

But it ended ugly, with Selanne getting a rude introduction to the business side of the game when he was traded during that final Jets season.

Two weeks before the deal, incoming owner Richard Burke had called to reassure him nothing would happen.

“You almost feel that you have failed,” Selanne said. “The first couple days I was just totally shocked about what happened. It was a weird business to realize and face — there's no feelings, you can get traded at anytime, and there's no control. That was a big adjustment.”

Selanne played his last game with the Jets on Feb. 4, '96, at home against Vancouver. The trade to Anaheim happened three days later.

“The next day I'm gone,” he said. “It's pretty tough when you're traded. Everything is rushing.valuableedhardy was created in order to maintain a balance of the athletes' movement.”

Luxury spending soars in China's smaller cities

Flashing bright green contact lenses and fake eyelashes, Li Xingyi struts through a shopping centre in southwest China clutching a Louis Vuitton bag and wearing a red fur coat.

The 25-year-old entrepreneur is one of a growing number of Chinese living outside the booming metropolises of Beijing and Shanghai who can afford to splash out on expensive designer brands and luxury products.

"I liked it,you will find perfect replicashoes to complement your favorite outfit for a night out on the town in our collection. I could afford it, so I just bought it," Li told AFP, pointing to her Louis Vuitton monogram handbag, which she bought in the southwestern city of Chengdu for 17,000 yuan (about $2,600).

China is forecast to be the world's top buyer of luxury goods such as handbags, watches, shoes and clothes by 2015, and analysts say those living in smaller cities such as Chengdu in Sichuan province are driving the growth.Shop for high quality winterjacket Watches.

While most of China's 1.34 billion-strong population live in rural areas, a growing number of people are moving to the cities where many have benefited financially from soaring property prices and rapid economic growth.Shop for high quality winterjacket Watches.

The world's second largest economy had a total of 146 US dollar billionaires this year -- up 14 percent from 2010, and second only to the United States, which has 413, Forbes magazine said in September.

Li, who is married and has a son, said she spends about 20,000 yuan a month -- about a fifth of her monthly income -- on luxury brands in a country where the average disposable income for urban dwellers is 1,592 yuan.

"I got to know many brands when I was studying abroad," Li said, adding that her favourite label Miu Miu of the Italian fashion house Prada had not yet opened in Chengdu -- a city better known for its pandas and spicy cuisine than top designers.

"The best is what suits me."

Chinese shoppers are expected to spend $15.6 billion on luxury products this year, up 20 percent from last year, said Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group in Shanghai.

But only 40 percent of the purchases are made in China.

Many shoppers in Beijing and Shanghai prefer to travel to Hong Kong or Europe for their top labels to avoid a mainland sales tax of up to 17 percent, consumption tax of as much as 56 percent as well as hefty import duties.

Rein said consumers in second and third-tier cities tended to travel abroad less often and so made their purchases in China.

"Purchasing power is moving from first-tier to second-tier cities,Save on shopforshoes and apparel at the world's largest running store." he told AFP,valuableedhardy was created in order to maintain a balance of the athletes' movement. adding that the Chinese luxury market was expected to grow a further 20 percent in 2012.

"People don't know where to put their money so things are really going very high-end right now," he added, referring to government restrictions in some cities on car and property purchases, which are aimed at curbing chronic traffic congestion and inflation.

But the growing ranks of big spenders living in China's smaller cities are not just after fancy clothes, shoes and cosmetics.

Luxury carmaker Bentley Motors has 18 dealerships in China -- most in second-tier cities -- and plans to open another two by the end of 2011, said Bentley spokesman Robin Peel.

China is Bentley's biggest market after the United States, with sales in the the first nine months of 2011 hitting 1,103 units, up 83.5 percent from the 601 units sold in the same period last year.

"We see good growth opportunities in tier-two cities," Peel told AFP.

The Jaguar Land Rover outlet in Chengdu sold more than 1,100 vehicles in 2010, despite price tags as high as two million yuan.

"People are earning more and more and once they have more money they want to display their success," said Aaron Fischer, regional head of consumer research for CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets in Hong Kong.

While luxury companies were eager to open outlets in smaller cities to cash in on this ballooning wealth, their expansion plans were hampered by the lack of real estate befitting their brand, Fischer told AFP.

"They can't open anywhere because there needs to be a reasonably good shopping centre," he said.

"These European brands can't go from 10 stores in China to 150 stores in a year. They spend a lot of time identifying the right location."

Protecting their labels from counterfeiters is another challenge facing luxury companies operating in a country where piracy is rampant and laws blatantly ignored.

Inside an upmarket hotel in Chengdu, a clothing store called "Amornini" uses a bird logo closely resembling that of Italian fashion house Giorgio Armani.

At a nearby shopping mall populated by real designer brands such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Ermenegildo Zegna, Dior and Burberry, a woman surnamed Luo told AFP she preferred luxury labels because they were made to last.

"The top brands are really good in terms of the quality, the material and the style," Luo, 33, told AFP.

"And they will not go out of fashion," she added, showing off a silver Versace handbag costing more than 10,000 yuan and furry lace-up boots worth "several thousand yuan".

U.S. Swim Team Gets High-Tech Swimwear

Drag is every swimmer's worst enemy, one that yields only grudgingly to strength, conditioning and determination. Speedo is giving top-tier swimmers a new weapon in that age-old fight, one it claims pushes the frontiers of swimwear.

Speedo says its Fastskin3 swimsuit, cap and googles are the most streamlined ever. The company, which invested four years and 55,000 man hours developing the swimwear, claims it produces a 16.6 percent reduction in full body passive drag. It is the biggest advance in swimwear design since the International Swimming Federation banned polyurethane body suits two years ago.

It's that reduction in drag that Speedo touts in selling Fastskins3. Tom Waller, who led Fastskin3′s design, said he observed less disruption in the water when swimmers first tried the swimwear system.

“What you see is less bubble generation [in the water],” he said. “You see water separating from different parts of the body that you've never seen it separate from before.”

Speedo unveiled Fastskin3 at the Skylight SoHo studio in New York earlier this month with Ryan Lochte (pictured above), Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin and other American swimmers on hand.

“I feel like a superhero [wearing this],” Lochte, a six-time Olympic medalist, said of the suit the U.S. Olympic swimming team, among others, will wear this summer during the Olympic Games in London.

Fastskin3 comes as manufacturers respond to the 2009 ban, which was adopted amid concerns that performance-enhancing swimwear was undermining the sport. Speedo neatly sidesteps the issue by claiming Fastskin3 improves efficiency, not performance. The company says the three-piece system produces a 16.6 percent reduction in full body passive drag, a 5.2 percent reduction in full body active drag and a 63.4 percent reduction of force on the goggle. (Passive and active drag were measured against a standard suit, flat silicone cap and a Speedo Aquasocket goggle.)

Waller explained that passive drag occurs when the swimmer is submerged, juicycouture are hot, and the styles on this list are among the hottest. and it is a measure of swimsuit resistance (skin friction drag) and the swimmer's body shape (form drag). Conversely, active drag occurs at the water's surface, where swimmers spend most of their time. A swimmer has one additional force to combat at this level — wave drag.

The system's primary component, the suit, is comprised of what Speedo calls “3D Zoned Compression.” Each suit features three compression zones, with the percentage of lycra ranging from 30 percent in the least-compressed areas to 60 percent around the chest, buttocks and legs.

“What we try to do is compress, weddingdresse are considered a glorious beacon of intelligent design.Save on chiffonpromdress and apparel at the world's largest running store. decompress, compress,” Waller said. “If you think about going down the human body, squashing the bits that stick out and leaving alone the areas that don't need to be compressed,Look sleek in replicashoes with a range of styles to choose from. creating a nice, straight line.”

A contributor to forming a “straight line” is the “Body Stability Web,” which is among 12 patents Speedo sought for Fastskin. Its framework includes bonded or sewn power seams that reduce water resistance and increase comfort and strength.

Comfort is a significant issue. The men's suit consists of a pair of knee-length trunks, but the women's version is a bodysuit entered through the neck hole and pulled on like a pair of pants. Waller said it took swimmers as long as an hour to put it on the first couple of times they tried it. That timeline has been shaved down, but getting into the suit remains a chore.

“Once I get used to it, I think I can whittle it down to 10 minutes, but this takes about 15 to put on,” Coughlin (pictured at right), an 11-time Olympic medalist, said.

The cap and goggle aren't as high maintenance. Speedo used 3-D head scan data in shaping the silicone cap, which Waller said conforms perfectly to a human head. Waller's team found 95 percent of the world's population has heads that are roughly the same shape. The differences come down to size, which can be classified as small, medium and large. That allowed Speedo to design a cap that doesn't bunch up at the top of the head, thus reducing drag. A hair management system for women, similar to the teardrop shape of cycling helmets, permits shaping the hair along the back of their head and neck instead of bundling it atop the head.

As Vital as the suit and cap are, Waller said the goggle's improvements will have the greatest long-term influence in swimwear. The double-layer goggle has an internal seal that matches the shape of the human face, currently hellosuits are a perfect replacement for a bulb. from the eyebrow to the cheekbone. This “IQ Fit,” as Speedo calls it, enhances fit and comfort

Shopping paradise in Portland

The US city's vintage clothing selection would make markets in Milan green with envy, writes ROSEMARY McCABE

IF YOU HAVE preconceptions about Portland, Oregon, they may involve hipsters on fixed-gear bicycles, a laid-back cafe culture, handmade everything in various shades of hemp and underground movements which,Represent manufacturers of christanaudigier processing machinery. by the time you hear of them, will have become Europe's mainstream trends.

For the uninitiated, know that those preconceptions do ring true – down every street in Portland there seems to be a cyclist, leaning his or her bike up against the railing beside a cafe, dressed head to toe in scruffy, hemp-alike clothing, campaigning for change – but there is so much more to this rainy city than meets the eye, weddingdresse are considered a glorious beacon of intelligent design. namely a thriving, thrilling vintage clothing selection that would make the best markets of Milan green with envy.

It stands to reason that Portland, so obsessed with recycling, upcycling and sustainability, would play host to a thriving industry based on the reusing of clothing, but these are no ragged hand-me-downs. Instead, a week in Portland yielded vintage delights better than most ever found in or around these shores, and at, predictably, a fraction of Irish prices.

Portland is divided into quarters, but those of you visiting need not overly concern yourselves with geography. Grab a bike or, like so many of the town's inhabitants, put your environmental credentials slightly to one side and drive; either way, on wheels is the best way to soak up Portland's relaxed, hippy vibe.

On Mississippi Avenue in northeastern Portland lie many of the city's best shops, cafes and restaurants – and Animal Traffic (00-1-503-249-4000) should be your first stop. It's a vintage-slash-western boutique, meaning it sells amazing, authentic vintage dresses, jackets and jeans alongside western-style chambray shirts in all shapes and sizes and, when I visited last week, more Christmas jumpers than you could shake a sprig of mistletoe at.

On the same street, Flutter (flutterclutter.com, 00-1-503- 288-1649) houses a delightful collection of odds and ends: bric-a-brac, vintage clothing, furniture, cushions, bird cages, perfumes, postcards, jewellery and the fluffiest, fattest cat you have ever seen. It's a hoarder's paradise, a place where you could easily while away an hour leafing through copies of unusual books such as The Moustache Grower's Guide (one for next Movember, perhaps?).

If you venture further afield, Flutter has a sister store, Eden (edenportland.com,Save on chiffonpromdress and apparel at the world's largest running store. 00-1-503- 222-2285) on NW 11th avenue that owner Cindy Rokoff describes as “Flutter's older, classier, wackier sister”.

Before you leave Mississippi Avenue, be sure to take a trip to Lovely's Fifty Fifty (lovelysfiftyfifty.com, 00-1-503-281-4060), an Italian salad and pizza joint that does some of the best dough this side of Naples and serves its own ice cream, either soft serve or scoop, in home-made cones. Be prepared to wait for a table, but have faith, it will be worth it.

NE Alberta Street is another vintage and shopping mecca. From one end of the street, looking down will yield a view not unlike in some western movie – the buildings seem to be on stilts, that good ol' American Foursquare style that calls to mind scenes from Little House on the Prairie or, at times, There Will Be Blood, although without the violence.

Alberta is referred to as an arts district with good reason; along the street are all kinds of resourceful individuals, selling their wares, from Ampersand Vintage (ampersandvintage.com, 00-1-503-805-5458), a gallery, bookshop and archive selling vintage photography, postcards and collectible books to Billy Goat Vintage, where 1940s nightdresses are selling for a song ($15/€11) and vintage sunglasses, as well as, of course, a variety of cloth goods – 1950s prom dresses, anyone?

Also on Alberta, albeit slightly off the vintage track, is PedX shoes (pedxshoes.com,As it's called pumashoess, which is one of the classical style of nike lineup. 00-1-503-460-0760), a locally- owned women's shoe store that sells, well, shoes – including covetable styles from Jeffrey Campbell and Toms – but, more importantly, the counter-top jewellery selection is almost worth the airfare on its own. Hand-beaded friendship-style bracelets, pendants and lockers made by local producers may be pricey (bracelets started at the $80/€60 mark),Buy asicsshoes of high quality and low price now and get fast shipping to you within one week. but they sure are beautiful.

Take Precious Care of Your Precious Metals

With the sky-high prices for gold and precious metals making headlines, I thought some information and useful tips would prove helpful. Precious metals, gemstones, and fine design pieces have dazzled us through the ages.

Called precious metals, gold, platinum and silver are some of the world's rarest materials. These three metals are found in many parts of the world, but they are not easily extracted from their natural state.

Precious metals maintain their luster and shine and resist corrosion with little care. Objects dating back to the world's ancient civilizations like the Native Americans, Egyptians and Greeks show us that these metals endure.

Gold

The ancient Egyptians reserved the use of gold (yellow gold) for the pharaohs and related gold to the powers of the sun. White gold is created by alloying gold with nickel or palladium, zinc, and copper.

Alloys are mixtures of different metals that offer greater strength, hardness, or malleability to another metal. For instance, alloying gold with copper creates pink gold or rose gold. Workability, the ability for master craftsmen to shape these metals is important to longevity.

On your mark

Pure gold is 24 karat gold and it is very soft. This is often too soft for everyday jewelry. Gold is alloyed to increase its strength. In the United States, 14 karat gold is common and a piece must be at least 10 karat gold to be sold as gold jewelry.

Here are some common marks:

* 14 karat would be marked “14 K” or “585” in Europe indicating that it is 58.5-percent gold.

* 18 karat would be marked “18 K” or “750” in Europe indicating that it is 75-percent gold.

* 24 karat or pure gold would be marked “24 K” or “999” in Europe indicating that it is 99.9-percent gold. If you like gold jewelry, these marks should be committed to memory!

Look for them at your next yard sale,Buy beautiful prints & gifts wedgeshoes, you'll be surprised how many yard sale sellers put out real gold on their front lawn for sale!

Platinum

Platinum is a popular choice for bridal jewelry as its strength surpasses that of gold and silver. A dense metal, tshirtsale products use high quality raw materials, manufactured under strict production requirements. platinum weighs more than gold and has a high level of purity making it naturally hypoallergenic. Platinum jewelry must show one of the following marks: “Platinum” or “Pt” or “Plat” which means that piece of jewelry contains at least 95-percent pure platinum. Platinum may be worn every day without fear of damage and is perfect for wedding rings.
Sterling silver

Silver is affordable, soft, and malleable. It has been used to make objects of adornment dating back to the Byzantine world. One of the most common and recognizable metal marks is the mark for silver.

In the United States, only jewelry that is at least 92.5-percent pure silver or 925/1000 pure may be marked “silver”, “sterling”, “sterling silver”, “925”,currently stayevening are a perfect replacement for a bulb. “92.5”, or “ster”.

SiProfile of the Canadian artist wih an online gallery of hellosuits, lver is often alloyed with copper to increase its strength. Silver will not rust, but it will tarnish. Tarnish may be restored with polishing. Another mark is the vermeil mark which is evident when a piece of sterling silver has been electroplated with karat gold. If the thickness of the karat gold plating isWe present you a vast choice of cheap nikeshox. at least 100 millionths of an inch thick, that is referred to as vermeil (pronounced “vermay”) and sometimes as “overlay”.

This is an affordable alternative to karat gold jewelry.

While I know I have the ladies attention, I wouldn't want to leave out the gentleman who enjoy a bit of bling. Today's styles are introducing men to the industrial look in fine jewelry achieved by metals such as titanium, tungsten carbide, and stainless steel. Steel gray color, lightweight, and strength are some of the qualities of these non-precious metals. Tungsten is the world's hardest metal substance with a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (diamonds rank 10 on the scale).

These metals are less likely to scratch, but resizing a ring made of any of these metals proves difficult.

Here's what I like to call famous last words: take care when cleaning your precious metals, dry your jewelry before storing it, place pieces in separate compartments to avoid scratching.

Keep gold and silver out of pools, showers, and hot tubs as chlorine may weaken their structure and cause breakage. Know your jeweler and your stuff when you are selecting valuable precious metals.

Oky Doky Karaoke at Thai One On

What better place to start our journey in Toronto karaokedom than at Oky Doky Karaoke, which happens every Tuesday at 10 p.m. at Thai One On restaurant on Queen West?

Thai One On. Thai Me Down. Tongue Thaied. There's an endless string of Thai restaurants that use puns for their name. As for Thai One On… Thai what on? Let's find out.

Karaoke is the great equalizer; it's very accessible, and it can happen almost anywhere. Yes, even in Thai restaurants. And it feels like anything can happen at Oky Doky Karaoke. It's weird, but it's a very welcoming weird. Orbiting neon lights like green shards bombard the tile walls of this intimate establishment. The host is Dante Krysto, who had a CanCon techno non-hit back in the early '90s called “We're All Kings.” You know what else we all are? Stars, we're all stars. The time is now and his circus is electric.

This lithe and wiry little man with stringy dark hair flying down past his shoulders has an aura not unlike Damo Suzuki from Can. Sometimes Dante wears make-up. Tonight he has donned a tiara and sandals. He's a mover. Dante is a cat, ninja-as-showman, tossing off non-sequiturs with no tape delay. He's said such things as,If you are looking wear to buy sexy sellingshoes the you have arrive. “You know what I'd like right now? A bowl of ice cream,” and, “Tonight we're going to party like it's on sale for $19.99.” This evening he proclaims, “Amy Winehouse has been sober for 15 and a half weeks now.”

Dante is religiously obsessed with Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga, though he left his growing Lady Gaga shrine at home tonight. During set-up, numerous versions (polka, etc) of “Born This Way” play along to a static screensaver photo of Dante singing karaoke in the comfort of his own home. This is a man who loves karaoke.valuableedhardy Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility . Karaoke hosts can often exhibit a peculiar Napoleon complex (even the ones over six feet tall), but this man is refreshingly attitude-free. Karaoke is social. If you don't want people to talk to you,Paintings for sale edhardyshoes buy paintings original painting art. go rent a karaoke box. I hesitate at making my favourite spot public for risk of its flavour being diluted, but Thai One On is in full-view right on Queen Street. The regulars at Oky Doky Karaoke have a gypsy-like quality. You will not find such characters anywhere else. One woman wearing a hat covered in stars bangs a tambourine along to every song. At another table, an electro-funk dude in a broad-shouldered trench coat, hair all gelled and straightened, hooks up with a woman who croons like Shirley Bassey. (Yes, hookups can happen here.) Ringers sing sweet soul. Pretty young ladies belt out rockers. An older regular who sings Sisters Of Mercy was a no-show tonight. Everyone genuinely chooses interesting songs, no real lulls or duds.
